The residential water supply from the Xinyi River had an unusual smell and was found to have levels of ammonia nitrogen far above national standards. Water supply to 200,000 people in eastern China was cut for 40 hours due to this.

Experts have found that the lack of attention given to Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) is the reason for the perenial water shortage in Ethiopia. In reaction to this, a capacity building program for the local communities and the experts has been called for.
The melting glaciers in the Andes Mountains pose a severe threat to two million people who are dependant on it for drinking water.
The plan to transport water from the Red Sea to the shrinking Dead Sea is opposed by environmental groups; the plan however is still in the planning stage.
