Vortisand Filtration Systems for Cooling Water Applications


Sonitec Inc. was founded in 1986 to manufacture and offer innovative technologies aimed at improving the quality of the water used in cooling and heating systems.Commercial, industrial, health care and educational institutions had a sincere desire to improve energy efficiency, equipment performance and system integrity in their heating, cooling water and process systems.

Vortisand can be easily installed, has high-efficiency filtration system which is used for the removal of suspended solids in cooling towers or chilled/hot water loops, down to 0.45 micron. The Unique design provides high-performance which is a result of the concept that combines centrifugal separation and sand filtration. Side-stream installation handles flow rates and cleans automatically without interruption of the system flow.Continuous filtering provides clean, clear water when used in conjunction with chemical treatment programs.

Vortisand Filtration Technology: Provides Sub Micron Filtration as Low as 0.2 Micron Removal

The Vortisand high-efficiency water filtration systems for the removal of suspended solids down to sub-micron range are easily installed and fully automatic. The very compact filters ensure a filtration that is 10 to 20 times finer than traditional sand filters. The performance of Vortisand filters is due to a unique concept which ingeniously combines centrifugal separation and sand filtration.Originator of the centrifugal separation and sand filtration technology, Vortisand filters have proven themselves for nearly three decades worldwide. Once installed, Vortisand filters need no attention during backwash and rinse cycles.

Vortisand: For Short Payback Time

  • Saves up to 10% energy by increasing heat efficiency: Savings are generated by preventing the formation of sediments and insulating layers for a greater heat exchange efficiency.
  • Reduced maintenance costs by reducing periodic clean ups: Decreases the cost associated with cleaning heat exchangers, coils, valves, strainers, condenser tubes, tower basins and other components in the cooling loop.
  • Optimal chemical treatment with up to 20% chemical reduction: Vortisand significantly improves the effectiveness of chemicals by reducing the Total Suspended Solids (TSS) found in cooling water systems. The use of biocides and corrosion inhibitors become more effective by reducing the suspended solid load.
  • Reduce downtime production losses by providing the cleanest filtered water: Vortisand will decrease the frequency of downtime and replacement of equipment.
  • Water savings generated by using less water for backwash Up to 80% less back wash required since most particles are trapped on the upper section of the filter, backwash water requirement is minimized.

Vortisand Features:

Sonitec has developed and marketed a unique filter for polishing potable, process and wastewater. Vortisand is a high performance automatic back washable sand filter that ingeniously combines centrifugal separation and sand filtration in the same vessel.

  • Vortisand achieves very fine filtration (down to 0.45 micron) at high rate, using 80 to 90% less water for backwashing compared to traditional sand filters.
  • Vortisand provides a filtration 10 to 20 times finer than traditional sand filters. Continuous filtering removes suspended solids.
  • Vortisand provides clean, clear water when used in conjunction with chemical treatment programs that chemical treatment alone cannot guarantee. Greater benefits result from very fine particle removal.
  • Vortisand is also very effective as a pretreatment for Reverse Osmosis, DI systems.
  • Vortisand filters have proven themselves for more than 35 years and are the result of many years of research and development.

ADVANTAGES BENEFITS

Finer Filtration:

  • Chemical program enhances the need for finer filtration: iron precipitates when oxidized and creates a very fine crystal that is a fraction of a micron, and then becomes larger. But the iron particle circulating through the heat exchanger is very fine and it needs to be that way otherwise fouling occurs very quickly. Dispersing agents are used to keep the solids fine enough and charged so their tendency to agglomerate and to get larger is then reduced artificially
  • 0.45 micron filtration will remove the very fine suspended solids before they agglomerate and foul in the tower sump or on heat exchangers. This fine filtration allows us to reduce the turnover rate and to recommend 10 turn-overs/days for clean water or less depending on the contamination

Low Backwash Requirement:

Low flow rate for backwash makes it easy to use clean chlorinated water rather than tower water for extended life of the media and chemicals savings.

Cooling Towers Benefits:

  • No more nozzles or strainers blocked for adequate temperature and recirculation of water
  • Sump cleaning is virtually eliminated
  • Pump seals last longer

Chemicals will work better because suspended solids will not interfere with the treatment. No more fouling on pipes, heat exchangers, and better corrosion and microbiological control will result.
