Pumping Equipment
Water Filtration Systems
Wastewater Treatment

Services: Pumping Equipment, Wastewater Equipment, Water Treatment, Marine and Commercial

Retrofit with Confidence: X-PELLER™

The X-PELLER™ was specifically designed for high volumes of trash pumping applications and low flow conditions in 4" vacuum primed and 4" flooded suction Smith and Loveless pumps.

In numerous field tests, it was successfully proven that the X-PELLER™ effectively expels high volumes of stringy materials, rags and other unusual trashy items due to its mono-port design. In these highly problematic installations, after the X-PELLER™ was installed, clogging problems were virtually eliminated. Some of these wastewater pumping applications include prisons, fairgrounds, college residence halls, and auto repair shops. The X-PELLER™ has been retrofitted and is successful in solving clogging problems caused by variable frequency drives and low flow issues.

As you know, the standard Smith and Loveless impeller rarely clogs; however, if you are faced with a high volume of trash pumping application, it is nice to know there is now the X-PELLER™ by Smith and Loveless.

S&L Flooded-Suction Non-Clog Pumps

Innovative Designs, Quality Pumps

Smith and Loveless Inc. has been an innovative leader in the pumping industry for more than 50 years. The innovative impeller, volute, shaft and mechanical seal design of the Smith & Loveless flooded-suction non-clog pump insures an operating life well beyond the industry standard.

Design Advantages

Dual Curve Volute

The uneven distribution of water pressure in a volute increases the radial thrust on the pump shaft, decreasing the efficiency and the life of the pump seal and bearings. Smith & Loveless was the first manufacturer to apply a double volute to wastewater pumps. Double volute pumps reduce radial thrust by balancing the pressure exerted on the impeller. Smith & Loveless is the only manufacturer to offer the dual curve volute. As with the double, the dual curve volute reduces radial thrust by balancing water pressure on the impeller. Unlike the double, the dual curve volute can be applied to any size pump.

Impeller Design

Smith and Loveless pumps are equipped with heavy cast iron, balanced impellers. Impellers are custom trimmed for each application. Only vains are trimmed; shrouds are left full diameter to prevent solids and stringy matter from accumulating around the shaft. The tight clearance between the impeller and front head minimizes recirculation, improving efficiency. The shaft and impeller bores are tapered for easy removal.

Mechanical Seal

A quality mechanical seal is the key to extending the life of a pump - and the return on your investment. Smith and Loveless pumps are equipped with a bronze mechanical seal, which allows heat dissipation. Because bronze is a non-ferrous material, it prevents abrasive iron oxide from forming in the seal assembly. It also prevents seal pieces from rusting together and impeding maintenance. Smith & Loveless pumps are designed so that the mechanical seal can be accessed and replaced in less than 30 minutes. All seals will eventually wear down, but proper maintenance extends seal life up to 7 years on average. Submersible pumps require a second seal for the motor-pump shaft. The Smith and Loveless motor-pump shaft does not require a seal, reducing cost and maintenance.

Easy Maintenance

Full access to the volute and suction elbow is possible by merely removing the capscrews and raising the entire rotating assembly. This design eliminates the necessity for cleanout ports in the volute and suction elbow. Hand cleanouts are normally not large enough to remove most objects that would clog a pump and in addition can cause raw sewage spillage or station flooding.

IRONMAN™ : Filtration Systems

High levels of iron and manganese can create problems. That’s why Smith & Loveless designed the IRONMAN System to effectively precipitate and remove high levels of iron and manganese from well water sources by combining the FIBROTEX® with an integrated oxidation system.

Not only does the IRONMAN System filter iron and manganese, it is also ideal for treating Ground Water under the Direct Influence of Surface Water (GWUDI), because the FIBROTEX also filters for cryptosporidium and other microbial pathogens. The FIBROTEX has been tested and certified to ANSI/NSF International Standard 61. This powerful combination of filtration for iron, manganese, and microbial pathogens – in one system – makes Smith and Loveless’ IRONMAN system particularly useful for small towns that rely on well water sources.

During the filtration mode, the oxidized incoming iron and manganese are captured by the FIBROTEX filter media. The filter media are comprised of synthetic fibers that are compressed and twisted into a matrix during the filtration mode. The fibers capture iron and manganese particles in the feedstream through a high-density path.

Once the resilient filter element is loaded with solids, the system then automatically untwists and stretches. The filter is automatically cleaned by an outward-flowing stream of backwash water.

The iron and manganese particles loosen and detach during the backwash mode. The backwash removes the iron and manganese as both are released into the backwash process. Once the automatic backwash is complete, the resilient filter can then successfully capture oxidized precipitates again.

Smith and Loveless is a market leader in providing municipalities with cost-effective small flow water treatment systems.

IMF PROTECTOR™

The IMF PROTECTOR™ System by Smith and Loveless provides a cost-effective ultrafiltration solution that easily meets and exceeds the Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (IESWTR) regulations.

The use of the IMF PROTECTOR™ ultrafiltration system in municipal applications provides a unit operation that filters cryptosporidium and other microbial pathogens specified in the criteria of the IESWTR and GWUDI.

The system features a low-foul KALMEM membrane that provides an effective barrier to fine particles, including waterborne pathogens such as cryptosporidium and giardia achieving removal efficiencies of greater than 4 log.

The Directflow process is designed to provide greater filtration efficiency than the traditional cross-flow processes used in other membrane systems because a greater percentage of the feed water permeates through its hydrophilic membrane.

The Directflow process increases the finished water recovery rate by using a "dead-end" design. This design eliminates the reject loop and forces all of the water through the membrane’s hollow fiber lumen, forcing the filtrate to exit through a central permeate carrier.

Eliminating the recirculation loop increases the system’s finished water recovery rate and decreases operating costs. This design eliminates the piping valve pumps and other ancillary equipment associated with cross-flow recirculation.

Smith and Loveless is a market leader providing municipalities with cost-effective small flow water treatment systems.

SCIENCO® Brinemaker: Softening Equipment

The SCIENCO Brinemaker comes in two sizes, the FG Series and the P-2 Model. Both units use Downflow brinemaking. Downflow brinemaking assures consistent saturation of brine as the influent water rises and the higher density brine sinks. With rock and solar salts, sludge accumulates at the bottom of the tank for easy removal. In addition, this permits the desalinization of sludge by backwash leaching. Because of these advantages, all of the SCIENCO Brinemakers employ downflow brinemaking.

The SCIENCO FG Series Brinemaker is built for large users' bulk salt storage and brinemaking needs. Because no two applications are the same, the FG Series adapts to the applications with the ability to handle various industrial salt grades: evaporated, solar and rock. The FG Series is shipped with a fiberglass tank and separate packaged component system. The System comes complete with a salt fill pipe, vents, dust collector, water level control (the patented LEVETROL®), water distributor, brine collector, and top and side manways. Optional ladders, ladder cages, pumps and heat/insulation packages are also available for a wide range of installation sites and climates.

The "little brother" of the FG Series, the SCIENCO P-2 Model Brinemaker, is designed specifically for the smaller-volume salt user. Its simple design and operation will provide years of reliable service. The SCIENCO P-2 Model Brinemaker does not require a float chamber, unlike many of its competitors, and the FLUITRON® Brine Collector eliminates the need for gravel or other supporting bed media when dissolving high-purity vacuum salt grades. A quick change of the internal brine collector and water inlet allows the P-2 Model to handle solar salt and rock salt grades, in case your requirements change over time.

DI-SEP® Nitrate Removal Filter

Nitrates can create problems for small to medium sized municipalities located in agricultural areas because the nitrates often contaminate potable groundwater sources because of fertilizer runoff. Smith & Loveless has developed the SCIENCO/DI-SEP Nitrate Removal System, which provides the municipality with a convenient packaged system to remove nitrate contamination of groundwater on-site. It includes a SCIENCO® Brinemaker and a DI-SEP® Nitrate Removal Filter.

The SCIENCO Brinemaker is designed to produce the brine necessary to regenerate the ion exchange resins found in the DI-SEP Nitrate Removal Filter.

The DI-SEP Nitrate Removal Filter removes nitrates by anion exchange on Type II strong base resin in the chloride form. The system is regenerated with a 10% brine solution of sodium chloride at 7.5/ft3. The state-of-the-art solid state controller maintains a consistent system performance and automatically regenerates the resins when the resin bed has been exhausted.

Smith and Loveless is a market leader in providing municipalities with cost-effective small flow water treatment systems.

DI-SEP® SX Electrolyte Filter: Copper Solvent Extraction for Electrowinning

Introduced in 1980, the Smith and Loveless DI-SEP® SX Electrolyte Filter was the first reliable electrolyte filter. Since then, Smith and Loveless has installed DI-SEP® SX units all over the world, while maintaining its commitment to reliability. With systems in Peru, Chile, Mexico, Australia, Canada, and the United States, Smith and Loveless is the industry leader in electrolyte filter installations.

Features and Benefits

The filter’s design offers low shipping, installation and maintenance costs. Plus, the DI-SEP® SX electrolyte Filter removes 95-99% of organic material which aids in producing an extremely high electrolyte quality.

The DI-SEP® SX Electrolyte Filter also has a user-friendly design. Components that might require maintenance are located to the front of the system for easier access. Open galleries can also be included for easier and safer passage to the filter components. The custom-designed control panel typically features an operator interface terminal, data highway and modem communications.

Smith and Loveless constantly looks for ways to improve the design of the DI-SEP® SX Electrolyte Filter to satisfy the mining industry’s changing needs. We also work closely with architectural and engineering firms and mining companies to customize the systems to their specifications. Through the years, many of these modifications have become industry standards.

The Smith and Loveless DI-SEP® SX Electrolyte Filter comes in the standard configuration and two new configurations, modular and container. All three styles enable the fastest and most economical shipment and installation possible.

In containerized shipping, the entire DI-SEP® SX Electrolyte Filter system minus the filter vessels is shipped assembled in standard shipping containers. This means more economical overseas shipment and less risk of damage during transit. In order for the system to be containerized, the valve and piping galleries are built less than 8’ (2.4 m) high. Containerization is the most economical method for overseas shipment.

In modularized shipping, the valve and piping gallery is rack-mounted and shipped separately from the vessels. It is complete with all valves, tubing, instrumentation and conduit in place. The modular style’s slim profile enables the DI-SEP® SX Electrolyte Filter to be successfully transported, even over narrow mountain roads.

Applications

The ADDIGEST is typically utilized for secondary treatment of residential or commercial/industrial wastewater. The system features capacities up to 200,000 gpd and BOD removal up to 340 #/D. These larger capacities are facilitated by longer plant lengths. In comparison to the factory-built models, the Field-Erected ADDIGEST offers greatly increased volume per unit of length. Additional equipment can also be added, which also expands the ADDIGEST capabilities to treat a wide variety of substances.

Model R NUTRIGEST®

NUTRIGEST Systems are an extension of the basic biological treatment process. They are designed to remove nutrients, especially nitrogen and phosphorus. Because of the high quality effluent provided by the NUTRIGEST, it is ideal for direct discharge to the environment. To the basic aeration and clarification system, various tertiary treatment steps are available to meet more stringent effluent requirements for nitrogen control, phosphorus removal and other advanced treatment.

Phosphorus Removal

Higher levels of phosphorus removal, beyond biological removal, can be accomplished via chemical precipitation following a secondary clarifier. Precipitation units, separate or in-line, remove insoluble particles from wastewater by converting them to metal phosphates, with the addition of iron or aluminum salts.

Nitrification

NUTRIGEST Systems for nitrification provide process stability and reliability with high removal efficiency and a minimum of process control. Ammonium ions are aerobically converted to nitrates in the basic systems. Smith and Loveless' broad line of aeration and clarification equipment ensures a healthy environment for the nitrifying bacteria. Existing secondary treatment plants can be upgraded for removal of Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN) with minimal expenditure for equipment.

Denitrification

When total Nitrogen removal is required, denitrification will follow the nitrification step and involve the addition of Smith and Loveless' two-stage anoxic treatment equipment in conjunction with proper aeration, clarification, flow-equalization and process control necessary for denitrification. Anoxic zones are available in combination with secondary treatment or as separate tanks for use in system upgrades.
