Welcome to Sealing Systems Incorporated. We are a national manufacturer and distributor of quality products for sustaining and maintaining municipal water and sewer systems by preventing inflow and infiltration. Our main product line includes Infi-Shield, Flex Seal, and Manhole Cover Inserts. We also have many more products to assist in solving your I & I problems, visit our website to view all of our product line.

SEALING SYSTEMS, INC. is located in Loretto, Minnesota. The company was formed in October of 1995. It was created by a group of individuals who have over 100 years of experience in the underground utilities market. SEALING SYSTEMS was incorporated by the State of Minnesota on December 12th 1995 and became SEALING SYSTEMS, INC. (SSI).

SSI recognized a need for a product to prevent inflow and infiltration in the joint section and adjustment ring area of manholes. SSI wanted a product that could easily be applied on the inside, which would eliminate the need to excavate the manhole. The product needed excellent elongation characteristics, enabling it to flex with the movement of a manhole. The product had to be corrosion resistant to the chemicals associated with manholes. It had to be abrasion resistant and it needed superior bonding capabilities to concrete, cast iron, fiberglass, and many other construction materials. Additionally, the product had to pass a vacuum test.

SSI determined the ideal product would be a urethane material. SSI discovered an aromatic urethane, which had been used in the floor coating industry for the past 30 years. This aromatic urethane had many characteristics SSI was looking for. However, the product wasn't perfect. It did not have the vertical hanging capabilities necessary for application at a desired thickness. In February of 1996, SSI employed a chemical engineer that modified the molecular make up of the urethane and also developed a thickening agent to combine with the urethane. Experimenting with different formulations and ratios of the two materials, he came up with the perfect combination to achieve exactly what was necessary. The two materials combined were the formulation of Flex-Seal Utility Sealant®.

Flex-Seal Utility Sealant is packaged in a kit weighing just 9-1/2 pounds. A kit will cover 12 vertical inches on a standard 24``/27`` diameter manhole. To date there are tens of thousands of manholes coated with Flex-Seal Utility Sealant®.

SSI began to search for an external seal to be used for new construction. They wanted a seal to be not only user friendly but also perform at the same superior level as their internal seal. In the spring of 1999 SSI purchased the patent rights to the INFI-SHIELD® product line. INFI-SHIELD® is designed to seal the outside of the grade adjustment ring area on a manhole or catch basin. SSI has made major improvements to the product's memory and mastic bond.

The improved Infi-Shield® External Uni-band is an inexpensive and permanent method of externally sealing the grade adjustment ring area of a manhole. The one piece molded seal has a reinforced preformed L shaped corner. Accommodating ground movement, Infi-Shield® External Uniband’s high quality rubber and non-hardening butyl mastic provide a flexible water-tight seal around the structure. Infi-Shield® External Uniband saves taxpayer’s money by not having to treat the ground water and by avoiding expensive repair and maintenance costs. INFI-SHIELD® installs in minutes and will pass a vacuum test.

In 2004 SSI began to market and distribute manhole cover inserts which are designed to prevent rainfall induced inflow through the manhole cover. The inserts are custom made to size from either stainless steel or a strong and durable plastic. The inserts are a low-cost fix and can be inexpensively installed by your own maintenance personnel.
SSI proves to be the industry leader in preventing and abating inflow and infiltration in your manhole/catch basin chimney area. So whether you desire ways to regain system capacity or prevent infiltration on new construction, SSI's product line is designed to be your one stop shop for preventing I/I. We hope that you'll call us for product information to gain a better understanding of the benefits that our products can provide for your collection system, road substructure and ultimately to your taxpayers.

Flex Seal Utility Sealant Flex Seal KitInfi Shield

Infi-Shield

This is a external sealing system which is a protection for all manholes and catch basins. This system creates a permanent seal from the casting to the structure. This effectively eliminates infiltration and siltation through the adjustment rings, reducing the hydraulic loads on piping, pump stations and waste water treatment facilities. In addition, frequently costly repairs and maintenance is reduced.

The Problem

With the growth of sanitary and storm water sewers, concrete structures have become an accepted industry standard. They serve both to contain water within, and also to exclude unwanted water from entering. Routine maintenance cost to repair, upgrade, and extend systems is an ongoing expense. Construction methods have remained basically the same, with little progress made in countering the hostile, deteriorating forces attacking the structures. While the use of concrete products remains popular, the industry is slowly changing and adopting new ideas.

What to Fix

To maintain internal integrity, products to improve the joint seals between concrete sections, manholes, and adjustment rings, have been introduced - with mixed success. Butyl and rubber are commonly used in joint seals, whereas, mortar is used in adjustment rings to keep ground water from infiltrating. But, as mortar breaks up, the never ending maintenance cycle repeats. Therefore, if we could guard mortar from attack, and delay breakup, we could maintain structural integrity and extend the useful service life of the system.

What Happens

In a manhole or catch basin, the deterioration of mortar is affected by a variety of forces - freeze thaw cycles, exposure to water, acidic soils, chemicals, ground faults, traffic - creating soil movement and general exposure problems. In due time, as the mortar seal on the structure is breached, infiltration of ground water and siltation increases, adding both to the accelerating deterioration of the structure and to additional processing expense for the treatment facility. Until recently, no effective method existed for protection against this attack.

The Solution

An external sealing system was developed by Sealing Systems, Inc., creating a protective rubber jacket, sealing the casting to the structure. This effectively eliminates infiltration and siltation through the adjustment rings, reducing the hydraulic loads on piping, pumping stations, and waste water treatment facilities. In addition, frequent and costly repair and maintenance is reduced, eliminating the sinking earth around manholes and catch basins. Expensive curb replacement, pavement, landscaping, and siltation clean-up is eliminated.

Benefits:

  • Eliminates water and soil infiltration through pipe and structures
  • Eliminates breakdown of adjusting rings on manholes and catch basins
  • Eliminates costly patching
  • Cost effective - short and long term payback
  • Reduces the burden of waste water treatment facilities
  • Seals castings to structure
  • Quick and easy installation
  • Adjustable to any height for manhole and catch basin ring sections
  • EPDM safety approved material
  • Product available to fit any size structure or pipe

Flex-Seal

An inexpensive and permanent method of sealing the grade adjustment ring area and joint sections in a manhole or catch basin from the inside of the structure. This state-of-the-art method is packaged in a kit which anyone can install.

The Problem

Engineers, contractors, maintenance staff, and rehabilitation experts know that over time their fine work from design to field installation will fall victim to acids, salt, and ground movement, etc. Manhole structures will leak at the joints and at the grade adjustment rings resulting in excess ground water infiltration. This will increase treatment processing costs and erosion to the structure.

The Solution

Flex-Seal Utility Sealant® is an aromatic urethane rubber. Urethanes are noted for extreme toughness, elongation, abrasion resistance, acidic resistance, and longevity. Sealing Systems, Inc. process allows a fast and simple method of sealing the adjustment ring area and joint sections on any concrete structure. When properly installed, the adjustment ring areas and joint sections will not allow infiltration and will not deteriorate from hydrogen sulfide or road salt.
