Many conventional thickener operations are subject to constrained operational performance. One such constraint relates to the rheological characteristics of the consolidated mud, wherein it becomes difficult to rake or discharge the treated material. The requirement to use flocculants to accelerate solid liquid separation within the continuous process of a thickener generates additional structure within the consolidated solids that, in itself, adversely affects the rheological characteristics. There are a number of physical and chemical remedial actions that can be taken to balance the performance benefits and challenges that flocculants bring to the thickening process. Ciba has successfully developed a range of products to meet this challenge. This paper will present both laboratory and plant data to demonstrate the potential and applied benefits associated with this technology.
