High turbidity and temperature fluctuation no obstacle for Dow membranes

Due to the rise and fall of tides, seawater turbidity oscillates greatly on a daily basis due to the water temperatures fluctuation during hot and cold seasons. In order to combat these significant challenges from the raw water source, HeBei DaTang WangTang International HuaTan Electricity Co. selected DOWTM Ultrafiltration membranes to produce acceptable feed water for the WangTang power plant located in HeBei, China.

Over the past three years of operation, The Dow Chemical Company (Dow) membranes have produced water with a silt density index (SDI) of less than two and turbidity less than 0.2 Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU). The outside-in flow configuration of the DOWTM Ultrafiltration modules also enables the ultrafiltration system to produce a stable reverse osmosis feed water. This further enhances and ensures the performance of WangTang’s reverse osmosis system, resulting in excellent flux, high salt rejection and high recovery.

“The raw water source presented two significant challenges for the WangTang facility: high turbidity and wide temperature fluctuation,” said Christina Fang, area commercial development manager, Dow Water Solutions. “Using the DOW Ultrafiltration membranes as a single pretreatment method to seawater reverse osmosis results in an economical and reliable solution for the power plant.”

The pretreatment pass uses DOW Ultrafiltration SFP-2660 modules. To learn more about DOW Ultrafiltration, or view this case study in its entirety, please visit www.dowwatersolutions.com.
