Traditional oily bilge discharge treatment systems have been pushed beyond their limits of performance by stricter environmental standards. Until recently ships typically used gravity separation devices such as parallel plate coalescers or centrifuges to separate oil and other materials from the bilge before discharge to meet the requirements of MEPC 60(33).
