Environmental Services: Dioxins Analysis, Stack Sample Analysis, Air Sample Analysis, Contaminated Land, Waste Analysis Services, Environmental Monitoring Services and Organic Analysis, and Food Analysis

Marchwood Scientific Services Ltd is a privately owned company, the directors being the major shareholders. The laboratory was established in 1983 by Rechem International, the waste management group, to provide an environmental monitoring service for its waste-to-energy facilities. At the time the laboratory was the only commercial, independent dioxin analysis laboratory in the UK. Since then the laboratory has become one of the leading dioxin analysis laboratories in Europe, and undertakes contract work for organisations all over the world.

Analysis of Organic and Inorganic Materials

Based in Southampton UK, Marchwood Scientific Services Limited (MSS) is a leading provider of quality laboratory services to the environmental and food sectors.

Using the most advanced analytical instruments available, operated by highly experienced specialists, we offer an independent service for the analysis of a wide range of organic and inorganic materials. In order to ensure quality of results, many of our procedures are accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

MSS is an international market leader in the analysis of dioxins and furans, and is the longest established independent dioxin analysis laboratory in the UK.

Using the most comprehensive and up-to-date analytical instruments available, MSS specialises in the testing of solid, liquid and gaseous environmental samples. Our scientists are experienced in the analysis of materials from a range of sources including ambient air, stack emissions, water, effluent, soils and combustion residues.

Dioxins Analysis- The Complete Dioxin Service

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (dioxins and furans) are a family of over 200 chlorinated organic compounds. Dioxins are ubiquitous in the environment at very low levels, and reach humans by intake in food, inhalation and absorption through the skin.

It is generally accepted that even minute amounts of these chemicals may cause cancer and birth defects. Dioxins and furans appear as by-products of some chemical processes and from inefficient combustion. Low human exposure guidelines necessitate the use of high resolution GC/MS for the analysis of these compounds.

At MSSL dioxin analysis is performed using High Resolution Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) using United States Environmental Protection Agency methodologies. Our analytical equipment is the most advanced available.

We are accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) for the analysis of dioxins in a wide variety of media including soils, waters, air samples and foodstuffs.

Stack Sample Analysis- A High Quality Stack Sample Analysis Service

MSS has over 20 years experience in the analysis of samples collected during the monitoring of pollutant releases to atmosphere. We were among the first in the UK to gain accreditation from UKAS for dioxin analysis in accordance with the European CEN standard, BS EN 1948: 1997. We also offer analysis of the following determinants:

  • Total chlorides expressed as hydrogen chloride
  • Speciated and total VOC
  • Hydrogen fluoride
  • Heavy metals

We guarantee:

  • Chain of custody
  • Reliability
  • Traceability of results
  • Adherence to deadlines
  • Competitive pricing
  • Rapid response to enquiries

Air Sample Analysis- Air Quality Monitoring

The monitoring of pollutants in the ambient environment can be undertaken by continuous automated analysers, or by means of passive samplers. The passive sampler is the simplest, most reliable and cost effective system for monitoring several pollutants over long sampling periods.

The passive sampler does not require electric power or a sample pump. A collection media adsorbs gas molecules over long periods, typically 3 months in urban areas. Following exposure, the sampler is returned to the laboratory for analysis.

Passive samplers
are simple to deploy and operate, and are extremely effective for a range of major pollutants.

MSS specialises in the analysis of passive sample tubes. Airborne pollutants that can be monitored using this technique include nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, ozone, ammonia, benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylene.

Contaminated Land

Contaminated land is a potentially valuable resource for new development, but the extent and degree of contamination must be evaluated before site is reused. The Pollution Prevention and Control Regulations (England & Wales) 2000 requires testing to establish the concentration of particular contaminants in soil. The Environment Agency of England and Wales is proposing to extend its Monitoring Certification Scheme (MCERTS) to the chemical testing of soils.

MSS has expertise and experience in the analysis of contaminated land samples to support the activities of developers and regulators involved in the redevelopment of contaminated sites.
MSS recognises the need for rapid on-site attendance and reporting of results when assessing soil and groundwater contamination. We can provide experienced site chemists, often same-day service and fast-track analysis.

In addition the following services are available for clients engaged in the development of contaminated sites:

  • Personal monitoring for dust, gases and vapours
  • Environmental boundary fence monitoring for most pollutants
  • Noise and vibration testing

Waste Analysis Services

Environmental Monitoring Services

Over the past few years the protection of food from potentially hazardous residues such as dioxins, PCBs and pesticides has become a major topic of public interest. MSS is a leading provider of quality laboratory services to the food industry, and is the market leader in the analysis of dioxins and furan concentrations in food samples.

Dioxins and PCB`s in Food

Both dioxins and PCBs enter the human food chain mainly through the intake of animal fats. Dioxins are ubiquitous environmental contaminants and are generally present at very low concentrations in all foods but are especially found in fatty foods such as cows` milk.

Although the use of PCBs is now severely restricted it has been estimated that total world production from the 1930s to 1980s was between one and two million tonnes. The compounds are very resistant to degradation and, as a consequence, PCBs are still widely present in the environment, albeit at very low levels, and are still found in foods. The main sources of PCBs in the diet are from meat, fish and milk.

MSS uses modern analytical gas chromatography/mass spectrometry methods to detect dioxins and PCBs in samples of food. Using the latest technology it is possible to measure concentrations of dioxins of one part per trillion. This detection accuracy can be compared to finding one grain of wheat in a load of 100,000 tonnes!

Commission Regulation (EC) No. 466/2001 came into force on 1st July 2002, setting legally binding limits (which are likely to be reduced as more research as more research is carried out) for dioxins and other contaminants in feed and foodstuff. These regulations fixed the TWI for dioxins at 14 pg WHO-TEQ/Kg of body weight and a maximum level for fish oil at 2 pg WHO-PCDD/F TEQ/g fat.

MSS provides a UKAS accredited analysis service for the 17 dioxins and furans designated as the most toxic by the WHO. The technique utilises GC/High Resolution Mass Spectrometry in order to reach a detection limit of 0.05 ng/Kg (dry weight)

Food Analysis

Laboratory studies show that pesticides can cause health problems, such as birth defects, nerve damage, cancer, and other effects that might occur over a long period of time. However, these effects depend on how toxic the pesticide is and how much of it is consumed. Some pesticides also pose unique health risks to children.

Pesticides in Food

Using the latest gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis techniques we are able to detect extremely low levels of pesticides in food samples.

The pesticides analysis service includes screening and specific compound analysis for a wide range of pesticides in food including:

  • Organophosphorus pesticides
  • Organochlorines
  • Organonitrogen compounds
  • Pyrethroids
  • Other food contaminant analyses are available
