KLA Systems offers a wide range of products and applications covering areas including sludge, wastewater etc.

Below is the list of products and applications:

  • Radial jet aerators distribute jets uniformly around the circumference of a central, pressurized, tank type chamber. As a rule, the jet manifold is used in larger scale applications, and the radial aerators are limited to smaller scale biological processes utilizing circular tanks.
  • Jet Manifold Aerators locate jet aeration nozzles (jets) on either one or both sides of a liquid distribution pipe. The jet nozzles are attached to an air distribution pipe by individual air ducts that serve as both an air source for the jets and support the air distribution pipe.
  • Slot injectors operate at different air/liquid flow ratios than conventional jets. The slot-shaped nozzle and mixing chamber provide a greater shear surface for mass transfer than a circular jet of identical area. The unique operating characteristics allow for duel flow control resulting in optimum aeration efficiency over a wide operating range.
  • Jet mixers are available in either manifold or radial configurations and FRP or stainless steel. They use the same double nozzle eductor technology as jet aerators to induce large quantities of secondary flow into the mixing chamber. The resultant plume entrains additional basin contents.
  • Floating effluent decanters are used to draw clarified liquid from near the surface of SBR's and digesters. Typical materials of construction are stainless steel weir and draw off pipe with foam filled polyethylene floats and cast iron swing joint.

Jet Aeration Technology Applications

KLA Systems focuses on different kinds of applications in its jet aeration technology. The applications fall under three categories -Activated Sludge Processes, Aerobic Biosolids Treatment Processes and Equalization/Holding. For industrial bio processes, the complete mix activated sludge process, equalization and sludge holding are the most popular applications typically with reactor depths in the 20-30-ft. (6-9 m.) range. For municipal applications, oxidation ditches, SBR and other nutrient removal processes are the most popular applications. The ASB process is generally found in the pulp/paper industry, where land is plentiful and inexpensive. The aerobic treatment of Biosolids is regaining popularity, with conventional (Mesophillic) aerobic digestion taking a back seat to auto thermal Thermophillic aerobic digestion (ATAD). This is an excellent application of the technology, with special emphasis on both superior oxygen transfer and mixing under very high (> 3.0 %) solids concentrations and reactor temperature (> 55 degrees C).

Jet Aeration Applications include:

  • Membrane Bioreactors
  • Complete Mix Activated Sludge
  • Plug Flow Activated Sludge
  • Oxidation Ditches (CLR)
  • Sequencing Batch Reactors
  • Pure Oxygen
  • ASB
  • ATAD
  • Aerobic digestion
  • Equalization
  • Sludge Holding

Since 2001 KLa Systems has been furnishing jet aeration systems to the food, pulp/paper, chemical, refinery and pharmaceutical industries as well as municipalities and water utilities on a global basis. Compared to alternative aeration technologies, a KLa jet aeration system offers the following advantages.

  • Proven 20+ Years Design Life
  • Low Installed Cost
  • Low Energy Cost
  • Low Maintenance Cost
  • Reduced Off-gas Volume
  • Superior Process Performance
  • Superior Corrosion and Abrasion Resistance

KLa jet aerators transfer oxygen by simultaneously introducing large amounts of high kinetic energy liquid and air through a series of jet nozzles. Intense mixing and high turbulence result in a fine dispersion of gas and liquid, which is then discharged from the jet nozzle, allowing the plume to mix with and entrain the surrounding liquid.

Jet aeration technology is unique because the highly turbulent, fine bubble cloud creates an enormous, constantly renewed gas/liquid interface inside the jet and along the horizontal plume, resulting in high mass transfer coefficients (KLa).When the horizontal momentum from the jet is transferred to the surrounding liquid, superior process mixing results.

A KLa jet aeration system consists of the individual jet aerators and in-basin piping system, and typically includes liquid recirculation pumps and air blowers. Other available jet system components include:

  • Back-flush system
  • Out-of-basin air and liquid piping system
  • Air flow measurement devices and instrumentation
  • Dissolved oxygen control system
  • Acoustical enclosures

KLa’s jet aerators, manufactured in our own production facility, are constructed of  fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP), which is an economical, lightweight, durable material that resists corrosion and is easily fieldassembled.

Jet Aeration Technology

The slot injector aeration system was introduced to the USA market in 2003. It is a proven oxygen transfer technology with over 25 years of successful operating service in Europe. The entry to the market place has focused on the food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Like the conventional jet aerator, slot injectors are two-phase liquid/gas contactors but they have very unique geometrical characteristics that result in an oxygen transfer system with distinct advantages compared to conventional jet aeration systems:

Capital Savings: Up to a 60% reduction in recirculated liquid flow results in smaller and/or fewer pumps as well as significant reductions in the quantity and size of the liquid piping systems.

Capital Savings: Up to a 15% reduction in air flow results in smaller blowers and/or motors.

Energy Savings: The higher pressure pumping system allows for more efficient impellers.

Energy Savings: Increased velocity of the jet plume allows for raising the jet nozzles and canting them downward resulting in lower pressure blowers.

Energy Savings: The Injector design characteristics and performance database allows for optimizing the aeration system performance by varying both the liquid and air flow. Two phase flow control means maintaining the highest level of energy efficiency over a wide band of operating conditions.

In introducing the slot injector system, KLA Systems' goal was to focus on both capital and energy savings as well as broaden our application base. The biological treatment processes we have been involved in include: Conventional and High Rate AS processes, SBR, CLR, MBR and MBBR. Since 2004 there are 22 systems in operation.

European chemical company Bayer AG was one of the earliest users of  Americanmade aeration ejectors. In the 1960s, the company installed ejector aeration systems in its wastewater treatment facilities.

In 1979, Bayer introduced the Slot Injector, which had four times the oxygen transfer capacity of the 8/14 Injector. The Slot Injector is dimensionally similar to a modern jet aerator, but uses a slot-shaped configuration to achieve higher efficiencies. The slot-shaped nozzle and mixing chamber provide a greater shear surface for mass transfer than a circular jet opening of identical area. The diverging change in shape allows the gas/liquid plume to retain more of its kinetic energy as it exits the device, resulting in more effective gas dissolution into the bulk liquid. The Slot Injector aeration system has operated successfully for more than 20 years in some of the largest industrial biological treatment plants in the world.

Jet mixers are used in wastewater treatment applications primarily in unit processes where liquid blending, solids suspension, flow generation or chemical reactions are key process parameters. Jet mixers are ideal for these types of applications. The superior performance of jet mixers are due to the following:

  • The high velocity liquid stream creates a negative pressure in the mixing chamber inducing additional liquid flow through the suction inlets located circumferentially around the outer mixing jet.
  • The transfer of horizontal momentum from the high velocity stream to the surrounding liquid entrains additional bulk flow.
  • The thrust imparted to the bulk liquid creates a small head gain which produces a horizontal bulk fluid velocity.

Jet mixing is a very effective way to distribute mixing energy while minimizing power input in large diameter reactors. The in-tank components are FRP and/or stainless steel with no moving parts. Conventional pumps are used for the jet motive flow and are located just outside the tanks for ease in maintenance. Compared to alternative mixing technologies, a KLa jet mixing system offers the following advantages.

  • Proven 20+ Years Design Life
  • Low Installed Cost
  • Low Maintenance Cost
  • Superior Process Performance
  • Superior Corrosion and Abrasion Resistance
