Insituform Technologies: Municipal Sewers, Industrial Pipes, Water Mains, Trenchless Technology, Tunneling, Boring

Insituform® constructs and rehabilitates water, sewer and other difficult-to-access pipes throughout the world using technologies that minimize digging and disruption. Our world headquarters are in Chesterfield, Missouri.

Ongoing research and development over the past 30 years have resulted in countless improvements to the Insituform® cured-in-place process (CIPP), further enhancing its durability and expanding its range of application. To date, it has been used to reconstruct more than 8,500 miles of underground pipe throughout the world. Independent testing and analysis - including recent tests of our very first installation in London in 1971 - have proven it to be a durable, long-term solution to the problems of deteriorating sewers.

As acceptance of our Insituform® CIPP technology grew around the world, our company looked for new ways to solve pipe problems with minimal disruption. In the 1980s, we expanded our business to include a successful tunneling operation and a proprietary process for protecting the steel pipelines used in the oil, gas and mining industries from corrosion. In 2001, we added pipebursting, microtunneling and sliplining to our menu of trenchless capabilities with our acquisition of Kinsel Industries, Inc. In 2002, we acquired Elmore Pipe Jacking, Inc, further bolstering our capabilities with the addition of glass-reinforced panel technology and other trenchless technologies.

With 2,100 employees and annual revenues of more than $450 million, Insituform® is today the world`s largest trenchless technology company. Our company`s stock is publicly traded on the NASDAQ exchange under the symbol INSU.

Insituform®`s products have been used at industrial facilities around the world to solve problems associated with difficult-to-access pipes.

Stop Leaks. Corrosion or faulty joints can cause lines to leak. Insituform® has technologies which rehabilitate pressure pipes, stop leaks, prevent internal corrosion and extend the useful life of the pipe. Our methods can be applied to water, process and gas lines in a wide range of diameters, pressures and temperatures.

Provide Containment. To prevent contamination of soil, groundwater or surface water, Insituform® has jointless, seamless and corrosion-resistant solutions for effluent lines. We seal mains, branch connections and branch lines, in a variety of diameters and configurations.

Restore Structural Integrity. Underground wastewater and storm sewers deteriorate over time. Cracks and failed joints can cause pipes to buckle or collapse. These conditions also lead to leakage or infiltration. Insituform® has solutions which restore the long-term structural integrity of deteriorated underground sewer pipes.

Our rehabilitation processes involve the installation of a woven or non-woven lining material into a leaking or structurally damaged pipe.

MUNICIPAL SEWERS

As sewers age, they deteriorate in many ways. Cracks appear and joints separate. Infiltration through these cracks and joints creates external voids, accelerates structural deterioration and can overload collection systems and treatment plants.

Most deteriorating sewers can be rehabilitated economically using Insituform®`s proven trenchless technology. By relying on Insituform®, you can solve sewer problems without digging or disrupting your community. Our professional installers work quickly, typically completing jobs in just days. Safety and liability risks are minimal. And the finished product has a 50-year design life, the same as that of a brand new pipe.

We specialize in sewer rehabilitation --and have nearly 30 years of experience in the trenchless pipeline rehabilitation business. That means, you can depend on Insituform® to anticipate and deal with jobsite issues before they turn into problems. You can also rest assured your project will be completed safely, on time and within budget.

We take complete responsibility for the quality of our work -- from product manufacturing through final installation -- and have the ISO 9000 quality systems to prove it. If a problem should ever arise with our solutions, you have a single source to turn to for answers.

Each of our solutions is designed to tackle specific pipeline problems while minimizing disruption to your community.

COMMERCIAL PIPES

Insituform® is the world`s most versatile and proven pipe rehabilitation solution. It is used to restore structural integrity to and remove infiltration from underground pipes.

Insituform® specializes in rehabilitating pipes that are underground or located in other hard-to-reach places. We have the products and capabilities to rehabilitate problem pipes from the inside by creating a seamless, jointless pipe-within-a-pipe. Our safety-certified installers complete projects quickly and economically with minimal inconvenience to you and your plant`s operations.

All of our technology, product manufacturing and installation operations are ISO 9000-certified. This means that we take sole-source responsibility for solving your problem, from the development and manufacturing of proprietary products to the engineering and installation of a solution at your site.

Since 1971, we have rehabilitated more than 7,500 miles of underground pipes. Our years of experience and independent product testing confirm the success of our technologies.

WATER MAINS

Aging water mains often suffer from corrosion, tuberculation or excessive leakage. These problems can affect water quality, decrease hydraulic capacity of the main or contribute to water loss. In some cases, the main may be structurally weak and prone to breakage.

Insituform® can solve these problems. With our proven trenchless technology, we can quickly and economically rehabilitate water mains with minimal inconvenience to your community. Our ThermopipeTM System solves internal corrosion problems and improves water quality by providing a continuous, impermeable barrier between the host pipe and the water.

Pipebursting

A semi- trenchless method of installing factory-manufactured pipes and service connections in place of severely damaged water, sewer and commercial pipes and service laterals. An ideal solution for upsizing capacity of existing lines ranging from 6 to 36 inches in diameter.

Advantages
Because it requires minimal excavation, pipebursting is a preferred solution for installing new pipes in high-profile areas where disruption to surrounding businesses, resident and the environment is an important consideration. It also reduces overflow in wet weather and minimizes the need for bypass pumping.

Slip Lining

A trenchless method of installing new factory-manufactured pipe and service connections inside existing sewer, water and commercial lines. Accomplished by pulling a new liner pipe into the existing pipe, creating a slight decrease in the inside diameter. Best for pipes ranging from 8 to 96 inches in diameter.

Advantages
Sliplining can be performed rapidly, without disturbing adjacent services or requiring bypass pumping. It makes it possible to repair long lengths of pipe with minimal disruption. Because the liner is structurally sound, it solves problems related to leakage and structural deterioration.

Microtunneling

A trenchless method of constructing new sewer and water pipe without requiring man-entry. Typically used for pipes ranging from 18-inches to 54-inches in diameter and 40- to 50-feet in depth.

Advantages
Our microtunneling method uses a ``closed system;`` water and mud removed from the ground are separated, decreasing the risk of environmental contamination. Because we complete microtunneling projects using safe, laser-guided equipment, there is minimal disruption to surface activities. Microtunneling is particularly effective in below-groundwater conditions and unconsolidated soils and where above- and below-ground obstructions exist.

Pipe Jacking

A specialized, man-entry tunneling method used to install new factory-manufactured pipes with minimal surface disruption. While used primarily for new sewer construction, it also can be used to rehabilitate and reline sewers and other pipe systems with diameters ranging from 54- to 120-inches.

Advantages
Pipe jacking is an economical alternative to and much less disruptive than using open-cut construction to install new underground pipes. Because it is performed with a closed system, pipe jacking decreases the risk of environmental contamination during construction.

Shotcrete

A technique used to rehabilitate large-diameter sewers ranging from 6 to more than 20-feet in diameter that cannot be cost-effectively rehabilitated with sliplining or cured-in-place pipe. Entails spraying a concrete coating to the interior surface of the structure being rehabilitated. Also an excellent solution for odd-shaped sewers, manholes, vaults, pumping stations and other concrete and brick structures.

Advantages
The shotcrete process effectively seals old concrete or brick to lengthen the service life of the existing structure. Resembling precast concrete when complete, it produces successful, long-lasting results.

Tunneling

A method of constructing new large-diameter pipelines in busy urban areas and challenging geological conditions. Because tunneling requires man-entry, it is ideal for construction of large-diameter tunnels, ranging from 5- to 26-feet in diameter.

Advantages
Tunneling is an economical, long-term solution for increasing the capacity of an existing wastewater and storm water collection system. It is often the best method for transporting large volumes of water. By eliminating the need for pump stations, new interceptor and relief tunnels can save millions in utility costs over the long term. Insituform® has the state-of-the-art equipment and expertise to work in a broad range of geological conditions.

Manhole Rehabilitation
SprayWall® is a spray-applied, cured-in-place manhole rehabilitation process. We use it to solve infiltration and groundwater problems in manholes by creating a durable, corrosion-resistant ``manhole-within-a-manhole`` that is designed to withstand hydrostatic pressure from groundwater. Often completed in conjunction with other rehabilitation projects.

Advantages
Because SprayWall® is applied tin a fast, one-step process, downtime and traffic disruption are kept to a minimum. Once the installation is complete, the manhole can be returned to service immediately, typically eliminating the need for bypass pumping.

Video Inspection Services

A method of evaluating and creating a permanent video record of underground pipe conditions. Insituform® will conduct evaluation video inspections for communities that wish to assess the overall condition of their pipe systems and develop priorities for repair programs. Preliminary inspections are completed immediately preceding a repair project to ensure the line is free of debris and to create a record of the line`s open and capped service connections. Following completion of a project, a post inspection video is shot to provide a permanent record, both of the repairs themselves and of the service connections that have been reinstated.

Advantages
Insituform® has one of the industry`s most flexible and technologically advanced video inspection systems. All new video footage is recorded digitally and downloaded to a central library, where it can be converted to the format (CD, DVD or VHS) that best meets each customer`s documentation needs. To ensure consistent high quality, all of Insituform®`s videos are reviewed by a team who has completed training from the National Association of Sewer Service Companies, an organization dedicated to developing standardized codes of sewer observation. With nearly 100 television crews throughout North America, Insituform® has the capacity to handle inspection assignments of all sizes.

PE Close-fit

A high-density polyethylene lining method of rehabilitating potable water transmission mains and other pressurized systems. Ideally suited for larger-diameter pipes of 16 to 48 inches in diameter.

Advantages
This solution created a tight-fitting, jointless pipe that can be installed in long lengths. While stopping leaks and preventing further corrosion in structurally sound piping, this process offers the money-saving benefits of polyethylene pipe and eliminates flow capacity reductions common in other rehabilitation methods.

Products and services may be limited by geographic region and project scope.

Insituform® CIPP

Our Insituform® process is the most widely used trenchless method for restoring structural integrity to and removing infiltration from sewers. It has been proven in pipes with a wide range of shapes and in diameters of up to nine feet (2.75 m). In the Insituform® process, a resin-impregnated Insituform® tube is installed into a damaged sewer. This process results in a seamless, jointless ``pipe-within-a-pipe`` with a smooth, continuous inner surface which usually increases flow capacity. We typically complete installations in a single day, using robotic methods to restore active connections from within the line.

Every aspect of our process has been proven through years of use. Our resins have been tested and proven for sewer applications. Our equipment has been specifically designed to ensure safety and achieve peak product performance. With new innovations and enhancements added each year, our Insituform® process is the most dependable and cost effective in the industry.

In addition to main line sewers, our Insituform® process is used to rehabilitate service laterals and seal connections working only from inside the main line. Our Insituform® Trenchless Point Repair™ process can be used to repair localized structural problems in otherwise sound pipe.

Insituform ArmorGRiP™

Insituform ArmorGRiP™ Panels is a product for rehabilitating large gravity sewers and drains with fiber reinforced, filled, thermoset resin panels. It is cost-effective for sewers with equivalent diameters ranging form 54- to 144-inches and even larger in some applications. Because it is a custom-fit solution, it can be installed in sewers of any shape, including:

• Round       • Square
• Oval          • Horseshoe
• Rectangle  • Egg

The panels are manufactured in a factory setting using MVI™ technology (patent pending). Panels can be manufactured in full 360-degree segments or two or more panels can be fitted together to form one 360-degree segment.

Advantages
Insituform ArmorGRiP™ Panels provide a strong, durable, sewer rehabilitation product that can resist groundwater, soil, and traffic loads for 100 years. By increasing either wall thickness or fiber reinforcement, Insituform ArmorGRiP™ Panels can be designed to accept nearly any external load a sewer receives. It can also withstand temporary sewer surcharge loads. This process, which can negotiate bends, is ideal for sewers that change in shape or size. It is an economical solution for large diameter gravity pipes.

Installation
It is a man-entry procedure where panels are fitted together right in the sewer to form a full segment , taking the shape of the original host sewer. Then, the annular space between the Structural Panels and the host sewer is filled with grout to complete the installation.

Insituform CP™ (Composite Pipe)

Insituform CP™ is a high-strength, fiber reinforced composite CIPP gravity pipe product that can be used in the 24``-60`` equivalent diameter range. Its unique ``sandwich`` wall construction provides the same long-term structural value as the non-reinforced Insituform® CIPP product with about half the pipe wall thickness. Insituform CP™ offers excellent structural integrity in circular and non-circular pipe reconstruction.

Materials & Structure
Insituform CP™ is reinforced with carbon fiber and/or corrosion resistant fiberglass materials. The design locates the structural reinforcing materials where they are needed, separated by traditional CIPP material. The Insituform CP™ wall design optimization can reduce the required thickness by about half. As with the traditional inversion Insituform ® CIPP product, there is a polyethylene coating on the inside pipe surface.

Insituform CP™ provides a seamless, jointless ``pipe-within-a-pipe`` that restores structural integrity to and removes infiltration from sewers. It can be inverted into pipes with a wide range of shapes and can navigate bends similarly to Insituform ® CIPP. The thinner wall product is ideal for stabilizing odd-shaped brick sewers by providing the required structural support. Its reduced wall thickness and continuous inner surface provide increased flow capacity relative to the host pipe and more conventional rehabilitation products.

The reduced wall thickness of Insituform CP™ allows a greater length of tube to be impregnated with resin, ``wet out,`` in a factory setting and transported to the jobsite. At the jobsite, the longer tube lengths reduce the number of inversions allowing projects to be executed more rapidly. For similar reasons this product also minimizes the use of on-site wet out requirements, which can make projects more cost-effective.

When projects require setting up in congested traffic environments or within limited access easements, the opportunity to extend the installation limits to reduce project risk or interference can be better provided using the Insituform CP™ product.

Insituform CP™ is an economical solution for medium-sized diameter gravity flow pipes. Insituform CP™ is installed using the inversion process.

Thermopipe®

A polyester-reinforced polyethylene lining system used for the trenchless rehabilitation of water distribution mains and other pressurized systems up to 8-inches in diameter. Thermopipe has a long-term independent internal pressure rating of up to 230 psi. Can navigate most bends.

Thermopipe solves severe internal deterioration problems and improves water quality by providing a continuous, impermeable pressure pipe lining inside the host pipe. It can navigate most bends and allows existing services to be reconnected with new factory-manufactured fittings. Thermopipe minimizes installation time and on-site disruption.
