Groundwater professionals have made Heron Instruments equipment their choice for short and long term monitoring of water levels in drinking water wells, monitoring wells and landfill leachate sites.

Heron is the trusted source for all your portable groundwater measuring equipment; making Heron the groundwater professionals’ choice for water level indicators.

Since 1995 Heron Instruments Inc. has grown to reach across the globe. Our products are available throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. We use state of the art design and the most up-to-date manufacturing technologies and combine them with high-tech materials to ensure Heron products that give years of dependable use.

The staff at Heron has more than forty years experience in design and manufacturing instruments. We’ve used them, worked in the field and understand the importance of quality and dependability. We’re constantly striving to improve our instruments and develop features that will result in longer use, fewer service requirements and enhanced reliability. It’s our ongoing commitment to perfection that has made Heron the “Instrument of Choice” for professionals world-wide.

Heron Instruments is one of the foremost designers and manufacturers of groundwater monitoring instrumentation. We’ve built our business and our reputation by developing rugged, dependable, accurate instruments that deliver precision and quality at a fair price, and supported by the best service in the industry.

The graduated steel tape method is considered to be the most accurate method for measuring the water level in non-flowing wells of moderate depth (less than 500 feet).

Ground-water-level measurements are used to determine hydraulic gradients, directions of flow, rates of flow, locations of ground-water recharge and discharge, the amount of water in storage, the change in storage over time, and aquifer hydraulic characteristics. Repeated measurements of water levels over time provide a history of water-level fluctuations that aids interpretation of water-quality and water-quantity data. For example, seasonal variations in recharge induced by pumping can cause changes in hydraulic gradients that may correspond to changes in water quality and water quantity.

Little Dipper

The Heron dipper-log is a low cost data logger for continuously monitoring water levels and temperature in wells, boreholes and open bodies of water. Its small size allows the dipper-log to be used in well diameters as small as 3/4 of an inch (20mm).The dipper-log is a durable & reliable ground water data logger. It is very easy to launch and even easier to download when used in conjunction with a bar-log barometric logger. No need to open separate files, the Heron designed software does it all for you. Because of the unique “grab” of the barometric pressure during set up of the dipper-log there is no requirement for elevation correction. Down in the valley or on top of a mountain it is spot on every time.

Water level data loggers are the collection instruments of choice for hydrologists requiring long term monitoring.  Data can be offloaded from the dipper-log data logger to a laptop or a PC. This allows for the easy printing and analysis of charts and tables.

The Heron dipper-log offers a wide range of sampling intervals with pressure ranges to 400ft (120m) water head with temperature.

Features:

  • Small size allows dipper-log to be used in well diameters down to 3/4 inch (20mm)
  • Also available in a completely submersible logger
    • Stores up to 16000 readings
  • Measures in both feet and meters, temperature
  • Upload onto PC using Windows based software
  • Programmable time, interval and delayed start.
  • Accurate to 0.1% full scale
  • 0.72 inch (18.5 mm) diameter by 6 inch (155 mm) long
  • Various head of water ranges
  • Unvented, slim cable
  • Direct read from top of well or submersible
  • Includes 50 feet of cable, wellhead readout unit, software and universal mounting kit
  • Pocket PC controllable
  • Telemetry Expandable
  • 3 year limited warranty

Important benefits you need to know about the Heron dipper-log.

The dipper-log is easy to use

Just follow the tree easy steps in the windows and pocket PC based software (Win 95, 98, ME, 2000 & XP) for successful installation.

Quick and easy data download. No calculations needed. The results are shown as compensated height of water above the logger and depth of water below datum together with temperature which can be graphed at the click of a mouse.

Barometric Compensation

The dipper-log does not use vented cable. The dipper-log automatically takes a barometric pressure reading during the logger installation. This value is stored in the logger and used to compensate all the water depth and height results obtained during the mission. The value is also used when taking real time readings.

Automatic Elevation and Barometric Compensation

The dipper-log automatically takes a barometric pressure reading during the installation procedure. Because the barometric pressure at any point varies with elevation this reading also compensates for the elevation of the well. If a bar-log is not used, this one time reading is used by the logger to compute the depth and height of water based on the barometric pressure at the time of the launch. This value lso compensates for the elevation of the site. The forgoing only applies when the dipper-log is set up at the site of the installation.

Variable Sampling Intervals

A wide range of sampling intervals is available to the user from one per second up to one every 255 hours in steps of seconds, minutes or hours. A "log time" interval is included. This facility increases the reading interval by one second for each reading allowing a total of 255 measurements over nine hours, ideal for short term pump tests. The dipper-log can also be set up to start at a future date and time to take readings at the preset intervals.

Depth of Water Range

The compact design of the dipper-log is ideal for monitoring surface water and deep water wells. The dipper-log is launched and then installed in the well with a simple wireline at the required depth. The unit can be stored inside the well casing giving protection against vandalism.

Well Head Read Out Data Access

For installations where frequent downloading is required, a well head readout version is available. This allows full downloading and control of the dipper-log from the surface without having to constantly remove the logger from the well. This version also allows real time readings to be taken, a useful feature for pump and drawdown tests.

The H.0IL and Sm.Oil oil/water interface meters are used to accurately measure the thickness of floating products (LNAPL) above the water table. They will also detect and measure sinking layers of DNAPL. The H.01L with its slim probe 5/8in (13mm), is ideal for wells, piezometers and direct push equipment as narrow as 3/4in (19mm) ID. The probe and tape will withstand hydrocarbons, solvents and other contaminants. This unit is used by professionals involved with the monitoring and remediation of groundwater contaminated by oil products. The H.0IL and Sm.Oil interface meter is suitable for wells, boreholes, underground and above ground storage tanks.
