The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a report touting point-of-use water treatment technology as an important tool in combating waterborne diseases, according to the WHO's Web site.
The 36-page document, from the International Network to Promote Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage, says that 1.1 billion people lack access to improved water sources.
The report says, "Less well known is the large potential contribution that household-level water quality interventions can make to immediately improve the health of the most vulnerable."
The report touts chlorination, solar disinfection, ceramic filters, combined flocculation/disinfections systems and safe storage as ways to improve water supplies.
