Simplex, Duplex, Automatic Filters & Filter Elements for Chemical, Cooling Lubricant, Water and Fuel Filtration

``All things are in flux``, as even the Greeks knew, but where solids and liquids mix, undesired pollutants will need to be filtered out. The central task of fluid and liquid filtering technology is to enable processes to work more efficiently. After all, the cleanliness of a liquid is often important for its usability. In principle, filtration is a simple matter: a filter cloth passes fluids through its meshes whilst retaining dirt particles. In practice, this is a highly complex problem of process technology.

Bollfilter is the US subsidiary of the German manufacturing firm Boll & Kirch Filterbau GmbH. For nearly 60 years, Bollfilter has supplied the premier filtration equipment and OEM replacement parts throughout the major industrial centers of Europe. These filters and strainers are now available in North America from our US corporate headquarters located in Plymouth, Ml.

The Bollfilter Product Range

Bollfilter products are integrated into suction and pressure pipes and protect important plant components such as valves, pumps and bearings from abrasive particles and choking. The filter housing consists of grey cast iron, nodular cast iron, steel or CrNi steel according to type and use. They are designed to national and international standards and norms. Continuous or discontinuous operation, manual or fully automatic filter cleaning are the determinants of filter choice.

Basic- Boll-Simplex Filter

Simplex filters are the basic model of filter fluids technology. Their filtration efficiency is just as good and reliably as of duplex filters or automatic filters. All filter element designs with their different filter media can be employed. Basic type Bollfilter equipment is for use in all circumstances where the plant or filter can be easily shut off to allow cleaning or replacement of filter elements.

Double- Boll-Duplex Filter

Duplex filters consist of two filter housings. One half of the filter is in operation while the other is being cleaned or on stand-by. If contamination exceeds a tolerance threshold, over to the clean filter side without any pulse pressure. The contaminated filter element is then cleaned while operation continues. The changeover is performed by a change-over cock or by a two-stage three-way ball valve. The design of the filter excludes simultaneous isolation of both filter chambers.

Selfclean- Boll-Automatic Filter

In all Boll automatic filters the filter candles, wedge wire candles or wire mesh candles are automatically cleaned without interruption to operation by backfushing. Cleaning can be performed by the cleaning filtrate fluid, filtrate fluid accelerated by compressed air or by external medium and may be initiated by differential pressure or time. Filters of this type are employed when manual cleaning is uneconomical due to the continuing nature of contamination, or when the production process is totally automated.

Selfclean 6.18 and 6.19 Automatic Filters

The main area of use of the 6.18 automatic filter is water filtration, hence its internal parts are generally stainless steel. It uses the crossflow reverseflow backflush system. The filter candle is open at both ends and filtration takes place from the inside out. In the longitudinal wedge wire design it is ideal for fibrous contaminants.

Type 6.18 becomes Type 6.19 by the incorporation of an external medium. Using high-pressure water or steam, this product achieves improved flushing efficiency and is recommended for low operating pressures or where sticky contaminants need to be released during flushing. The main area of use of this Boll automatic filter is water filtration, hence its internal parts are generally stainless steel.

Selfclean 6.62 Automatic Filter

Selfclean type 6.62 is a new development especially designed for smaller flow rates of fuels and lubricating oils. The special design allows filter finenesses down to 10 IJm. When in use as a fuel filter there is also a facility for integrating a bypass filter with change-over mechanism.

Self Clean 6.61 Automatic Filter

This Boll automatic filter meets the highest demands for filtering moderate or large flows of oil, washing solutions or fuels. The combination of a flushing process dependent on the differential pressure and the multi-chamber system achieves the highest solids separation of any automatic filter. Backflush is aided by compressed air and creates flushing pulses equivalent to high-pressure cleaning whilst independent of the system pressure. Hence, pressure fall in the system and the flushing volume are very low. An electronic control system permits monitoring of system contamination.

Self Clean 6.46 Compact Filter

This compact filter for horizontal or vertical fitting is employed chiefly in lubricating oil systems as a continuous cleaning unit. Its turbine-driven constantly revolving flush mechanism operates free from wear even with low flow rates and pressures. The fine-grade filter candles are stable under differential pressures of up to full operating pressure. The continuous crossflow-reverseflow backflush provides uniform cleaning over the entire candle length. A safety filter and an overflow safety device at the first stage provide safety in emergencies.

Water Filtration Filter 6.18

Selfclean Strainer 6.19

In applications where plant processes require large volumes of industrial water to be treated prior to use, re-use or discharge, the Boll selfclean strainer offers the optimal solution.

The Boll Selfclean 6.19 Strainer Advantage

Thanks to the unique large filter surface area of specially designed open-ended filter elements, the Boll selfclean strainer sets the standard for process quality and performance in the industry. The advantages are clear:

- maintenance free operation,
- uninterrupted, reliable operation of the entire plant
- reduced plant operating costs by extending the life of systems and machines

The Design

The high precision Boll selfclean strainer features simple, yet rugged construction. Boll housings are manufactured either in cast iron, carbon steel or stainless steel. Boll strainers are available in flange sizes up to 36`` for flow rates up to 40,000 gpm. Filter elements and all internal components are stainless steel. The only moving parts are the flushing and throttling arms. All contact parts are self-adjusting. The carbon-impregnated Teflon bearing and flushing bushings are sealed to guarantee efficient back flushing.

During the straining process, fluid flows through the inlet flange into the bottom of the filter housing. A partial flow of approximately 50% of the unfiltered fluid is fed through a central riser in the filter element assembly to the top of the filter housing and into the open filter elements. The remaining fluid flows through the bottom of the filter elements. The fluid flows through elements from the inside out.

During the cleaning cycle, each element is cleaned in succession, with no interruption of the straining process. Backflow is achieved with filtered process fluid (type 6.18) or an external fluid (type 6.19), for operating pressures less than 29 psi, or when straining sticky contaminants. High-pressure water or steam can be used as the external fluid in the type 6.19. Backflushing is controlled automatically based on either inlet/outlet pressure differential or pre-set time intervals.

The Features

  • large filter surface area
  • long filter service life
  • extended maintenance intervals
  • simple, quick cleaning and maintenance
  • optimized automatic backflush cycle (complete cleaning in 13 seconds)
  • precise degree of filtration
  • modular system with multiple options
  • efficient removal of filtered solids
  • simple handling
  • compact design
  • low pressure drops
  • low operating costs
  • minimal backflushing quantity

The Process

The Boll selfclean strainer uses open ended cylindrical filter elements. As fluid flows through both ends of the elements, particles in suspension are trapped along the entire length of the elements. This ensures that contaminants are distributed uniformly over the entire filter surface area. As deposits accumulate, differential pressure across the elements rises and triggers a backflushing cycle automatically. A gear motor starts the cycle by sliding the throttling arm over the upper end of each filter element.

Simultaneously, the flushing arm is rotated, sealing the lower end of each element, and the sludge drain valve is automatically opened. The pressure gradient generated between system pressure and atmospheric pressure allows a small quantity of fluid to flow from the outside through the elements (axial or reverse flow), detaching the particles from the elements. At the upper end of the filter elements, the throttling arm provides a cross flow, flushing down the detached particles. The combination of axial and cross flows provides a highly effective flushing action, uniform across the entire filter surface area.

    - water for snow-making machines
  • power generation
    - cooling water for turbines and oil circuits

The Open-Ended Filter Element Advantage

Because the filter elements are cylindrical and open at both ends, the selfclean strainer offers significant advantages over other strainers that use conical or expanding disc elements:

  • The Boll cylindrical strainer elements require less frequent replacement than conical or cylindrical elements as the unique backflush action prevents the elements from getting clogged. The result is savings in labor and replacement part costs;
  • The Boll selfclean strainer elements separate solids more reliably than strainers that use expanding discs. With expanding discs, contaminants can become trapped in-between the discs, deteriorating the level of filtration; and
  • Unlike conical or expanding disc filter elements, BOLL elements can be fitted with either lateral slot wedge wire or vertical slot wire. This option provides superior cleaning results, particularly suited for fibrous particle filtration.
  • Flushing intensity with open-ended elements, throttled at the top
  • Lateral slot wedge wire

Selfclean 6.46 Fuel Oil Filter

The Task

The economic operation of small and medium-sized diesel engines and generators with heavy fuel oil over a long period makes increased demands on the cleaning of lubricating oil. The quality of filtration of the lubricating oil is one of the factors determining its useful life, smooth engine operation and hence also the level of operating costs.

The Concept

The Boll concept separates filtration from lubricating oil care. The Boll selfclean type 6.46 automatic filter fulfills the task of lubricating oil filtration in the best possible way. It can be fitted directly to the engine as a main flow filter. Another solution is to incorporate it in the plant`s pipe system, possibly with additional flushing oil treatment. A double filter fitted directly onto the engine takes over the function of an indicator filter. In both cases, the Boll selfclean type 6.46  keep all solids away from the bearings. Removal of combustion residues from the lubricating oil, on the other hand, it is carried out by a separator or another auxiliary flow treatment section. This solution has proved to be advantageous both with regard to operational safety and from the point of view of economy.

The Solution

The Boll selfclean type 6.46 automatic filter`s superiority is demonstrated not only by a perfect filtration result, but also by the best possible operating behavior. Its high- precision construction is convincingly simple and robust. The selfclean 6.46, which can be mounted horizontally or vertically as an attachment or plug in filter, has a housing made from grey cast iron. The filter is available in various sizes with nominal diameters up to 150 mm and can be easily adapted to engine manufacturers` special requirements.

The Advantages

Bollfilters consistently remove dirt particles from contaminated liquid and recycle cleaned liquid back into the process. They help to ensure the plant`s operational safety continuously over a long period. This saves resources, protects the environment and reduces costs. Bollfilters are the best insurance for the product and the process. Boll automatic filters` special advantages include:

- precisely defined filter grades
- large filter surfaces
- low flushing quantities
- low pressure losses
- long service lives
- precise function of the back-flushing device
- compact, modular construction
- simple handling
- low maintenance costs
- long life
- low operating costs

SELFCLEAN 6.60/ 6.61

The Task

The trouble-free operation of all internal combustion engines or machining plants requires consistently good plant conditions, for which the cleanliness of the fuels, lubricants or cutting oils and coolants is essential. A constant operating pressure is also important. To achieve the necessary purity of these liquids, and guarantee constant pressure ratios, efficient automatic filters are required. These filters must

  • have the capacity to handle high rates of flow and remain compact and ergonomic in design
  • minimize back-flush discharge volumes to minimize waste
  • guarantee a defined degree of cleanliness of the liquids
  • achieve a high level of filter surface regeneration by efficient, dynamic self-cleaning
  • prevent any drop in system pressure during the backflushing process
  • protect moving parts from wear, increasing the useful life of the plant, and
  • help to keep operating costs low by using durable components

The Concept

The Boll automatic filter selfclean type 6.60/6.61 is designed precisely to fulfill the task. The filter housing is equipped with several filter chambers. Each filter chamber contains a filter insert made-up of a number of filter candles, each candle is made from a spiral-wound support structure over which high-grade filter mesh is drawn. Large filter surfaces with high ``free passage`` areas guarantee a low pressure differential. As each filter chamber becomes dirt-loaded, it is isolated from flow and regenerated by back-flushing, each in sequence with no interruption to operation.

The Solution

During the filtration operation the liquid to be filtered enters through the inlet into the change-over housing, on which the filter chambers with the filter candles are mounted. The rotary selector mechanism is located in the centre of the housing. The contaminated liquid is fed into the filter chambers and flows through the filter candles from outside to inside. The solids to be filtered out are retained on the filter mesh. Cleaned liquid passes through the inside of the candle to the filter outlet in the lower section of the housing.

The Advantages

In economic terms, the best is always the result of ``as much as possible`` for ``as little as necessary``. Where the use of liquid fuels, lubricants and cutting oil and coolants is concerned, this means: consistent, precise filtration and regeneration of the liquid with minimal losses, a requirement for a forward-looking business. One-off investment in high quality filter systems becomes more cost-effective with increased service life and improved protection of machinery. In many cases it is possible to replace existing, outdated filters with the new Boll 6.60/6.61 model, with minimum disruption.

Advantages of the Boll automatic filters type 6.6O and 6.61 include the following:

  • precisely defined filter fineness
  • large filter surfaces
  • minimal flushing quantities
  • low pressure losses
  • long service life
  • precise function of back-flushing system
  • compact, modular construction
  • simple handling
  • low maintenance costs
  • long working life
  • low operating costs

Automatic Filters 6.46

Automatic Filters 6.60 and 6.61

SELFCLEAN 6.60/ 6.61

The Task

When it comes to process fluid filtration, the consistency of both the cleanliness and the operating pressures is essential to the success of any plant`s production capabilities. To meet the challenge of ensuring these requirements are met, automatic filtration is capable of achieving the following points is necessary:

- capacity to handle high flow rates while maintaining a compact, ergonomic design
- guarantee of a defined degree of liquid cleanliness
- minimization of back-flush discharge volume to reduce waste
- prevention of system pressure drops during the back-flushing process
- high level of filter surface regeneration by efficient, dynamic self-cleaning
- reduction in maintenance and operating costs through simplistic, reliable designs

The Concept

The Boll advantage lies within the ability to utilize a simple design to handle a multitude of different flow rate, material and clarity requirements, while consuming minimal operation and maintenance costs through the elimination of disposable media.

Boll 6.60/6.6 1 automatic self cleaning filters are constructed of rigid cast iron housings including the individual chambers which encapsulate the actual filtration area. Each of the five different filter sizes available has a pre-determined number of chambers, as well as a predetermined number of filter elements within each chamber. Together, this allows for the accommodation of a large variance in flow rate requirements through the filter.

The automatic self cleaning of the filter elements is accomplished through a reverse flow of a small amount of clean process fluid from within the filter, aided by compressed air as an independent energy source. Cleaning occurs in one chamber at a time while it is placed ``off-line``, that is, removed from the system flow. The result is a highly effective back-flushing process without any disruption to the system pressure, during which the filtration process continues the entire time.

The Solution

During the filtration phase, contaminated fluid enters the inlet flange and is equally diverted into all but one of the filter housing chambers (one chamber always held off-line). Within each chamber is a cluster of filter candles, each constructed of stainless steel wire mesh drawn over a spiral metal frame which is capped at the top and open ended at the bottom. The liquid is forced inside the elements leaving particles in suspension trapped on the outside of the mesh. The clean fluid then flows out the bottom of the candles and is directed through the outlet flange of the filter.

A back-flushing cycle is initiated by either a pre-set timer interval or by reaching a pre-set value of differential pressure build-up across the inlet and outlet of the filter, as detected by the Boll supplied indicator. The differential pressure increases proportionally with the amount of accumulating debris on the candles and thus can be visibly monitored at any time by viewing the dial display.

An electric motor (model 6.61) or pneumatic actuator (model 6.60) rotates the changeover plug located in the center of the filter housing, to the next sequenced to the next sequenced chamber to be flushed, thus putting the chamber formerly in reserve, which is now clean, on-line again. Rotation stops by means of a proximity switch and cam plate, with a designated position for each chamber orientation. The new dirty chamber is now off-line and is ready to be automatically cleaned.

A solenoid valve is electrically switched and pneumatically opens a normally closed poppet valve at the sludge discharge drain and at the air reservoir on the filter. Compressed air is explosively released from the air storage reservoir up into the chamber along with a small amount of clean fluid from within the filter, which together flush through the inside of the candles in the opposite direction of the filtration flow, blowing off the collected contaminants from the exterior of the mesh. The flushing solution and debris are then channeled through the center of the filter via the changeover plug, and dispersed out the sludge drain. Compressed air continues to blow through the isolated chamber for a few seconds to ensure all particles are removed. Finally, the sludge discharge and air inlet valves are closed and the chamber gradually refills with a controlled amount of filtered, clean fluid through a pilot bore in the changeover plug. Residual air is vented out the top and the chamber is now completely clean and is ready to be brought back online upon the signal to clean the next dirty chamber.

The Applications

Within the manufacturing arena, Boll automatic back flushing filters provide a low maintenance, highly efficient means of removing contaminant solids in emulsions, cutting oils and alkaline cleaners.

The models 6.60/6.6 1 filters can be seen in a multitude of manufacturing environments around the globe with emphasis on central coolant/oil systems, individual machine-tool high pressure skids, aqueous parts washing equipment, and heat treat quenchant applications.

Boll automatic filters are designed to serve as the secondary means of filtration in any given system, whereby finer particles that bypass the primary filter are removed to obtain the final clarity requirement. Additionally, they are commonly integrated into systems as protection barriers for downstream pumps, cutting tools, nozzles, etc, where they are not necessarily filtering to a finer clarity, but rather functioning as the ultimate road block against excessively sized ``fliers`` that may bypass the main filtration system and shut down equipment.

Through the use of precision mesh permanent media elements, Bollfilters are able to establish a maximum allowable particle size of any contaminant, in any process fluid.

The Advantage

  • fully automatic operation
  • long maintenance intervals
  • simple maintenance procedures
  • low operating costs
  • exact filtration fineness provided by precision stainless steel wire mesh elements
  • off-line automatic cleaning by compressed air results in no system pressure drops during the simultaneous filtration process
  • large filtration surface area optimizes back- flushing efficiency and accommodates high flow rates
  • efficient operation at line pressures as low as 22 psi
  • rigid cast iron construction
  • compact, modular design

Water Filtration Filter 6.18

Automatic Filters 6.60 and 6.61

Various filter elements are used in our individual filters and include the following:

A filtration medium in the form of a cloth insert is the heart of every fluids filter. It essentially consists of a supporting body with a filter mesh. Different designs provide different sizes of filter surface, and more so through the optimum combination of core components every fluid can achieve the desired degree of cleanliness.

Basket Element for Coarse Filtration

The basket element is suitable for coarse filtration or for minor contamination. The dirt collects in a basket shaped filter insert and can be easily removed for cleaning.

Ring Filter Element

The ring filter element is similarly constructed to the basket element, but has an additional concentric mesh cylinder, increasing filter area by about 30%.

Multi Mantle Element

The multi mantle element insert consists of several cylindrical filter mantles. These provide a large filter surface for only a small space requirement and permit the employment of fine- meshed cloths. Filtration takes place from the outside in.

Star Pleated Element

The star pleated element has a large filter surface yet a small diameter due to the pleating of the filter element. This makes long cleaning intervals possible and the use of fine meshes

Filter Candle Insert

The filter candle insert contains several mesh candle elements of the same size and mesh connected in parallel. This gives a large filter surface with a very compact design. The filter candles are outstanding for their particularly high resistance to differential pressure.

Filter Candle Insert for Backflushing Filters

As in the ordinary filter candle insert, several filter candles are screwed into a single candle holder. The holder is fixed to the filter housing and remains there during backflushing in the filter chamber.

Filter Cartridge

The filter cartridge consists of non-woven pleated plastic, glass fiber or paper element. It is capable of filtering very fine dirt particles.

Perforated Sheet for Coarse Filtration

The perforated sheet as a surface filter is suitable for coarse filtration of dirt particles from 3-10 mm. According to hole size and spacing, free filter cross-sections of up to 48% are achievable. In addition, perforated sheet can serve as a support for stretched filter media (meshes).

Wedge Wire Candles

Wedge wire candles consist of longitudinal rod sections around which metal sections are welded at the contact points. Gap widths are from 30 pm to 2 mm. They have an almost unlimited service life, are manufactured complete from stainless steel and are particularly suitable for fibrous contaminants.

Filter Papers and Non-Wovens

Filter papers and non wovens are three dimensional filter media for the finest degrees of filtration. They consist of porous, absorbent papers, synthetics or glass fibers between 0.1 mm and 1.0 mm thick. They are used in oil filtration and also for water in special cases.

Wire Meshes: Square or Plain Weave, Twill Weave and Special Twist

Wire meshes are suitable for surface filtration with mesh sizes in the range 5pm to 2mm.

- Square or plain weave meshes- one warp thread is woven around each weft thread. This weave is suitable for filtration in the range of 100 pm to 2 mm and as a standard weave gives low flow resistance
- Twill weave meshes- one warp thread is woven around two weft threads and vice versa. This weave is elastic and easily shaped. The filtration range is between 30 and 80 pm.
- Special twist meshes- the optimized braid weave is a combination of strong threads for really high strength and thin threads for the narrowest pore cross-section. Its special weave permits high dirt capture on the filter surface. It is the ideal mesh for all backflush candles, with high free flow cross-section and low flow resistance for a filtration range of 10-70 pm.

The Boll Manufacturing Concept

Boll & Kirch manufacture small runs and unique items to order and in close consultation with customers. Because of the variety of orders and tasks, flexibility in production planning and the use of resources is the most important organizational principle. With its network structure and a combination of assembly-line manufacture for component production and group and workshop manufacture for final assembly and plant manufacture, Boll & Kirch has found the right way of achieving this.

All manufacturing units plan and control their own assignments independently and are personally responsible for them. This lean production system guarantees the product quality and attention to deadlines for which the company has made its name as a systems supplier throughout the world.

The Boll Logistics Concept

Flexibility and decentralization substantially reduce internal logistics costs. Materials acquisition, testing and storage are guided solely by the needs of the different manufacturing teams. This eliminates long lead times or transport and intermediate products are directly available in the different manufacturing areas.

Besides the synchronized availability of main components for manufacture, central stores stocks are sufficient to guarantee dispatch of original BOLL spare parts to customers world-wide within 24 hours. The 7.000 most frequently used parts are always on stock. All other parts can be manufactured in a very short time. The unique and characteristic labeling of the parts and their packing guarantees genuineness and quality.

Bollfilters originally won their outstanding reputation in the marine industry. From the start Bollfilter products were at home on the high seas. Then they progressed to many other areas and are today used all over the world. To meet constantly rising demand Boll & Kirch has built up a dense network of branch offices. Their global presence in all important industrial centers in turn generates new growth trends. The company`s presence thus forms a stable basis for further expansion in the 21st century. And more: it guarantees customers throughout the world reliability and depth of service.
