One recently completed project for UKWIR identified the causes of discolouration events within distribution and developed a risk based assessment process for identifying vulnerable areas.  The process is structured such that it can be readily incorporated into company analysis and reporting procedures using data from existing company databases.  The assessment process is already being used as the basis for the ‘proactive investigations’ in one water company’s DOMS.  The project included a review of the benefits and limitations of various technologies and control methods for reducing the risk of discolouration.

Partnering & Alliancing

Black & Veatch are part of more Partnering projects, Alliances and Frameworks than any other multi-professional engineering company in the UK Water Industry. This style of work is our preferred way of doing business in the UK, and accounts for 75% of our business in the water industry. Amongst many others we have delivered solutions for Thames Water, Southern Water, Welsh Water and the Heathrow Terminal 5 team for BAA.

We have numerous co-located "Client-Consultant-Contractor" teams working in a fully integrated manner, committed to the overall success of their team's objectives. These relationships take many forms: from single project partnership; through long term programmes of work; to simple frameworks for our services.

Our people are co-located alongside clients and are able to use their skills throughout the project/programme process, contributing in an exceptional way to deliver real value to all. Our people are proactive contributors to these teams, working in close co-operation in mutually beneficial relationships with our clients and with their suppliers.

Fundamental to our approach is the ability to focus the world-wide expertise of Black & Veatch at a local level using people with local knowledge, drawing upon the expertise of the whole Black & Veatch organisation. We promote this though our network of offices both in the UK and overseas, and through the co-located alliance teams.

We use the same philosophy overseas. Our network of local offices and partners focuses the efforts of our experts. We provide the optimum local solution using our global expertise. Our people also work within client organisations around the world. This is mutually beneficial, allowing us to offer our expertise whilst developing a greater understanding of the local situation.

At Black & Veatch we create sustainable engineering solutions that balance the needs and values of society against natural forces. By ensuring that our projects relate to the wider environment, we provide forward thinking answers to our clients.

In the Black & Veatch Environment Business we focus on sustainable solutions to the problems of infrastructure development, which we deliver in sympathy with the natural environment.

Environment Assessment

Black & Veatch provide environmental assessment of infrastructure projects; from strategic development of options, to design and construction on site. We have a proven track record of working closely with engineers and developers to gain regulatory approval and minimise environmental impact.

We do this through delivery of strategic environmental assessment (SEA), environmental impact assessment (EIA), environmental audit and the provision of technical advice.We have expertise in species and sites that are formally protected, including European sites of nature conservation importance. We offer a range of services including data collection, surveys, assessment, negotiation with conservation organisations, habitat creation and, where appropriate, translocation.

We have an established network of specialist associates who support us in delivering a wide range of SEA and EIA.  Our clients include government departments, public authorities, contractors and industry.

Gaining early endorsement from statutory and non-statutory organisations, landowners and the public is pivotal to the successful delivery of projects. We have developed a number of effective ways of addressing this, including managing public exhibitions, co-ordinating formal liaison groups, and producing user-friendly publicity material. This helps ensure that development proposals are accepted and that any conflicts are resolved.

Other environmental assessment services include:

  • Risk assessment;
  • Expert witness services;
  • Planning, including application for planning consents;
  • Environmental desk studies;
  • Environmental audits (pre-acquisition and pre-divestment);
  • Development of environmental management systems; and
  • Provision of environmental awareness training

Environment Modelling

Black & Veatch provide environmental modelling services across a wide range of fields. With expertise in hydrodynamic, sediment transport and water quality modelling, we undertake model development, impact assessment and audits. This is often in support of wider engineering projects and so is used to drive infrastructure design and investment.Environmental modelling can also influence the siting of developments such as discharge outfalls and harbour walls, and ensure that environmental impacts are minimised. We use modelling to assist project delivery across a variety of sectors, including flood and coastal defence, waterside development and environmental impact studies.

Using models developed by the world's leading hydraulic research centres, combined with in-house development of specialist advanced models, we are able to provide our clients with an in-depth modelling service, from simple 1D schematisations up to complex full 3D modelling.

In the case of wastewater discharges, where the pipe ends our environmental modellers' role begins. We predict the fate of wastewater in the receiving environment, whether this be rivers, estuaries or marine waters. Our environmental modelling team is able to integrate effectively with in-house or external sewerage network modellers, to ensure an effective and accurate representation of the real world.

Our modellers assess the suitability and design of structures, such as ports, harbour walls, dams and flood and coastal defences. With the ability to simulate and predict changes in flow and wave action, we can assist engineering design and detailed environmental impact assessment studies. In addition, we can assess the integrity and fate of structures in both the long and short term.

Environment Assessment

Environment Modelling

Black & Veatch is one of the UK's leading providers of flood and coastal defence appraisal and design. Working closely with the Environment Agency of England and Wales in particular, we assess, design and deliver sustainable flood and coastal defence schemes.

Strategic Analysis

We have an established track record of undertaking high level strategic management planning for flood and coastal defence and river basin management. We consider the full range of issues, including geomorphology, habitats, land uses and flood defences. The effects of long term natural changes are evaluated and monitored in relation to river and coastal environments. We routinely establish and predict the impacts associated with changing water levels and flood events. This involves multi-disciplinary studies to address concerns regarding hydrology, drainage, siltation and the wider environment.

Scheme Justification

As well as high level strategic studies, we appraise and deliver flood and coastal defence schemes to protect people and property, and also habitat and the wider environment. With sea level rise and increased storminess predicted for the UK and many other parts of the world, there is the need for informed investment decisions, both in terms of new and existing flood protection. Scheme justification involves identifying the most appropriate solution to a problem, in terms of technical viability, economic justification, environmental impacts and long-term sustainability. In doing so, we consider both hard and soft engineering solutions, including the engineering of habitats.

Project Delivery

Black & Veatch undertake the delivery of schemes, from design through to construction supervision and contract administration. Innovative solutions to problems are developed for both large and small scale projects. We work under a variety of contracts, offering best practice and best value. Risk management is key to our approach throughout the life of our projects.
