Aeration and Mixing Equipment for Lakes and Reservoirs – Aquaerator; Consultancy and Installation Services

AMG Ltd was established in 1972 to provide a specialist Environmental Consultancy and Project Management service for the aeration, mixing and destratification of reservoirs and lakes.

AMG Ltd is a founder member of the Environmental Industries Commission (EIC) and a member of the British Water forum.

In the late 1990’s, AMG Ltd developed new cutting edge technology to improve the aeration and mixing of reservoirs and lakes. The European Union financed the 2 year Research and Development Project, which was undertaken by H R Wallingford and Barcelona University. The Project focused on the Best Available Technology on the market in 2001 and the published report states, "final pre-production 'AQUAERATOR' was significantly better than the Helixor". The report was published in May 2003 and the scientifically evolved 'AQUAERATOR' was born.

By providing innovative design and cost effective bespoke solutions the AMG Ltd mission is to make life easier for clients by improving water quality. Our Environmental Consultancy Division provides a unique, full turnkey service stretching from water quality analysis, initial design and specification. Our Installation Division will undertake the complete Installation together with the overall maintenance of the 'AQUAERATION System'.

Based in Glastonbury, AMG Ltd work throughout the United Kingdom. We are able to offer clients a well-organised and progressive professional service by formulating an agreed Environmental Management Plan for each reservoir or lake.

Initial fish farming tests have shown that salmon, trout and carp all benefit from improved water quality affected by the 'AQUAERATOR'.

Our clients include: Anglian Water PLC, Bristol Water PLC, Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, Thames Water PLC, Corus Strip Products, Marine Harvest (Scotland) Ltd. AMG Ltd is working towards a Quality Management System certified to ISO 9001:2001 and ISO 14001:2001.

AMG Ltd provides its clients with a complete professional installation service and turnkey solution for improving the water quality of reservoirs, lakes and fish farms.

AMG Ltd has extensive experience in the installation and commissioning of specialist aeration equipment and in particular the 'AQUAERATOR'. Our service includes detailed design, civil construction, mechanical and electrical installation and commissioning.
Thermal stratification occurs during the summer months, which can cause a number of problems in water bodies. The oxygenated, warmer water tends to overlay the colder denser water, which inhibits vertical mixing and in particular the downward transfer of dissolved oxygen.

The bottom waters become deoxygenated, with the possibility of the release of heavy metals from the bed sediment and the warm, well-lit surface layer will be conducive to the growth of large populations of phytoplankton.

If stratification can be controlled by artificial mixing, dissolved oxygen can be maintained at an acceptable level throughout the water column and algal growth is reduced as the phytoplankton are continually mixed through the water depth reducing the time spent in the Photic (well lit) zone, where growth is possible.

The 'AQUAERATOR' is a new device, which uses compressed air to promote mixing in water bodies subject to stratification. The bubbles reduce the bulk density of the water-air mixture, generating a vertical plume, which entrains the ambient near bed water, promoting vertical mixing and preventing thermal stratification."

For example the mixed air and water at the top of the draught tube is equivalent to 175 l/s; at 10m height the entrained mix is 4.5 tonnes/sec and at 20m height, the mixed air and water is 13.4 tonnes/sec.

Aeration and Mixing Installations to date:

Original Systems:

  • Anglian Water Services ----- Rutland Reservoir
  • Bristol Water ----- Chew Valley Lake
  • South West Water ----- Wistlandpound Reservoir
  • Bristol Water ----- Blagdon Reservoir
  • EU Trial Aquaerator Systems:
  • Thames Water ----- Wraysbury Reservoir
  • Agencia Catalunya de l'Agua ----- Foix Reservoir

Aquaerator Systems:

  • Bristol Water ----- Blagdon Reservoir
  • Bristol Water ----- Barrow 1 Reservoir
  • Bristol Water ----- Barrow 2 Reservoir
  • Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council ----- Lakeside Development

AMG Ltd has been working on a number of recent projects. Research Projects. For example, aeration and m the Field Research was conducted in Wraysbury Reservoir, which is owned by Thames Water and Foix Reservoir managed by Agencia Catalunya de l’Agua. Both field trials were performed in April to October 2001 and 2002. The results of both of these field tests are recorded and commented upon in the H R Wallingford Report dated May 2003. Since then, AMG Ltd has been busy with installing successfully installed three Aquaerator systems into Reservoirs in the UK. Primarily we have been focussing on Bristol Water PLC, which is actually very local to us. Thus it was particularly important for us to ensure that the installations and commissioning were completed quickly and competently.

Reservoir Water Destratification

AMG Ltd Consultants are committed to the provision of design, consultancy and project management services in support of water based environmental projects. Within our Consultancy Division we are able to provide skilled and experienced personnel proficient in the design, specification and management of such projects. Various types of technical computer software are used and a 2D computer generated drawing service is also available.

We are able to provide professional assistance on the water quality of the reservoir or lake and can offer solutions to improve the water quality, whether it is used for amenity or drinking water purposes.

When the reservoir thermally stratifies during the summer months, it can present the following problems:

Nitrogen/Phosphate locked in the bed sediment becomes readily soluble; this increases the risk of Eutrophication and the occurrence of unsightly algal blooms.
Heavy metals in particular Manganese and Iron also become soluble, which can cause significantly increased, financial expenditure during the water treatment process.

By aerating and mixing the de-oxygenated bottom waters it may be possible to prevent these two problems occurring. AMG Ltd is working closely with Imperial College of London and Glamorgan University, on various MSc and PHD projects to develop our understanding and knowledge about the behaviour of large water bodies.

AMG Ltd and Marine Harvest (Scotland) Ltd have undertaken some R & D with regard to “AQUAERATION” and Aquaculture, specifically with regards to commercial fish farming.

We are also investigating modifying the “AQUAERATOR” to treat Industrial and Domestic Wastewater.

Our Principle Consultancy Services include:

  • Preparation of Method and Risk Assessments
  • Echo-sounding of reservoirs using Sonar Technology
  • GPS positioning and mapping of deepest positions of the reservoir
  • Sampling of water column using YSI 6000 multi parameter probe
  • Scientific Sampling of water column and bed sediments
  • Laboratory Analysis using Accredited Laboratory
  • Production and interpretation of data
  • Production of digital maps and drawings
  • Graphical comparisons of data
  • Bi/Monthly Sampling regimes
  • Algal Identification
  • Underwater survey and video of existing equipment
  • Locating airline using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
  • Design and specification of suitable Aeration and Mixing Systems (if necessary)
