The water industry is a diverse and dynamic marketplace, and in some countries it is mainly categorized by two types of companies. The first provides water supply and sewerage services while the second provides water-only services.

U.S. has the largest market for water treatment equipment worldwide and is estimated at a figure of U.S. $6.3 billion in 2007, as stated by Global Industry Analysts, Inc. Europe is the second largest market followed by Asia at third position.

A new system has been developed by Professor David Stuckey and a team at Imperial College London`s Department of Chemical Engineering. This could help solve water recycling problems in urban areas and water shortages in developing countries and has won a 250,000 GBP Brian Mercer Award for Innovation from the Royal Society.
