Biography

Jeff McDonnell is Professor and Richardson Chair in Watershed Science at Oregon State University, Dept, of Forest Engineering. His PhD is in Forest Hydrology and he is a registered professional hydrologist with the American Institute of Hydrology. Prof. McDonnell was recently Leverhulme Fellow at Bristol University and Hayward Fellow at Landcare New Zealand. He has also held research fellowships with NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, Japan Forest Products and Forest Research Institute and Freiburg University. He has received the Horton Research Grant from American Geophysical Union, the Nystrom Award from the Association of American Geographers and the Warwick Award from the British Geomorphological Research Group.

Dr. McDonnell is President of the IAHS International Committee on Tracers. He is a Science Steering Committee member of the IGBP committee Biospheric Aspects of the Hydrological Cycle and member Science Steering Group for the IAHS Prediction in Ungauged Basins initiative (the 2nd International Hydrological Decade). He is also active with other UN organizations including the IAEA, where he is a founding member of the Joint International Isotope Hydrology Program and Isotope Water Cycle Model group. Work for AGU includes current membership on the Horton Research Grant Committee and outgoing Chair of the AGU Surface Water. He recently hosted the AGU Chapman Conference on the State-of-the-Art of Hillslope Hydrology. He has served as Associate Editor for the journal Water Resources Research and is now Associate Editor for Journal of Hydrology, Hydrological Sciences Journal, ASCE Journal of Hydrologic Engineering and Editor of Hydrological Processes’s HPToday. Dr. McDonnell is also Editor-in-Chief for the new IAHS Book Series, Benchmark Papers in Hydrology. He has published articles on hillslope hydrology, watershed hydrology and isotope hydrology and edited books including the Elsevier textbook (together with Carol Kendall) “Isotope Tracers in Catchment Hydrology” and the recent Wiley book (together with Tadashi Tanaka) “The Hydrology and Biogeochemistry of Forested Catchments”.
