Arizona`s rapid growth, desert environment, and historical reliance on groundwater have resulted in a program of groundwater management, in the two large urban regions and other parts of the state. This program has been largely successful in moving toward statutory management goals. Elsewhere in Arizona, there is limited knowledge of groundwater supplies and limited regulatory structure affecting groundwater use. The paper provides an overview of groundwater management in Arizona, including discussion of Arizona`s innovations as well as a brief discussion of several unresolved water resource issues.
