Synopsis

This paper covers the preliminary works made before the submission of the final proposal for the 50 MiGD IWP seawater RO desalination plant at the Taweelah Complex of Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA) and particularly: The rationales to ask for an SWRO as an extension to the Taweelah Complex already equipped with 230 MiGD of distillate water (MSF + MED).

The procedure adopted by ADWEA to select the best proposal and particularly the required minimum 3-month pilot plant operation during the hottest and worst period for sea water qualities. This pilot aims to demonstrate the feasibility and some of the main operation parameters (energy, reagents) of the technologies proposed by the competitors in their technical offers.

The description of the ONDEO Degrémont pilot: 4-stage pre-treatment process with sand removal and high-rate flotation and 2 steps of dual-media filtration in series, Ultrafiltration pre-treatment (for comparison), and Reverse osmosis.

The results obtained on this pilot by the pre-treatment: 4 months of operation yielding rather good SDI (1.8 to 2.9 with incoming sea water SDI 20 to 45 %/min) including a comparison between ultrafiltred water and those produced by the “conventional line” described above showing equal and often better SDI obtained by the conventional line than after the UF ones - by the RO: flux - water quality tables and a discussion about the robustness of the chosen pre-treatment and the RO conditions to remove efficiently boron (from 6 to 0.5 ppm) on the 2-pass RO system will be given as well as evidence of the absence of any Mg(OH)2 scaling even at pH 10.6 in the 2nd pass reject.
