Biography

Brian Berkowitz obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics, University of Alberta, Canada, and his D.Sc. at the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. He worked as a research hydrologist with the Israel Hydrological Service, and then as a visiting professor in the Department of Geological Sciences, University of British Columbia. In 1993, he joined the Weizmann Institute of Science. He has acted as a rapporteur and consultant to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) - Commission for Hydrology, and as Associate Editor for Water Resources Research, He currently sits on the editorial boards of Transport in Porous Media and Advances in Water Resources. He has also received several awards, including the Landau Prize (1997) for national scientific achievement. Prof. Berkowitz has published widely on a range of topics; his major area of interest focuses on modelling and analysis of fluid flow and chemical transport in groundwater systems, with specific interest in fractured and heterogeneous porous media. He has developed innovative new theories on water flow and the movement of chemicals in natural rock formations and taken them both into the laboratory and out to the field, where he has successfully tested their accuracy. In doing so, Prof. Berkowitz has received broad international recognition for his development and integration of cutting edge techniques in fields as diverse as hydrology, statistical physics, geology and computer simulation.
