The origins, control, and treatment of nonpoint source pollution have become an increasingly important environmental concern. Increased development and urbanization will occur as populations continue to grow. The proliferation of roadways and other impervious surfaces are part of these development activities. Such surfaces and the stormwater runoff that they produce can have a large impact on receiving water bodies. This paper documents the benefits of stormwater from vegetated shoulders that are typical of common rural highway cross sections.
