Synopsis

After initial interest in the early ninety’s reverse osmosis (RO) has not been a favoured technology for seawater desalination in the Gulf.RO has recently returned to the Gulf on a large scale thanks to the Al Taweelah RO project launched in March 2002 by the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA).The Al Taweelah RO project is not only one of the largest RO projects in the world but also the first RO project in the Gulf which will be developed as a private scheme. The shortage of previous experience with seawater RO (SWRO) in the Gulf, including projects developed along traditional Engineer, Procure and Construct (EPC) lines, was one of the major difficulties encountered for structuring the request for proposals (RFP).

The sensitivity of RO to site specific parameters was another aspect which needed both careful considerations, together with the introduction of innovative procedures in order to ensure the successful and reliable implementation of the project. The experience gained in this project is in many aspects totally innovative. It may represent both a novel reference and a useful tool to assess reverse osmosis projects on private schemes. The present paper aims at describing the steps taken during this project to understand, reduce and evaluate the hurdles and risks, whilst ensuring the economic competitiveness of a private project.
