Biography

Educational Background
Corrado Sommariva joined Mott MacDonald LTD in 2000 as Director of Desalination Projects. Corrado is presently involved in all the desalination and power related business in the company. He obtained his PHD at Genoa University in 1986 and continued working at Genoa University as a researcher in biotechnology and wastewater treatment processes.

Professional Experience
He is still maintaining relationships with the University of Genoa and is working part time as associate professor.
In 1986 he joined Italimpianti SpA where he worked as project engineer in several desalination and power related projects. From 1992 until 1996 he was responsible for the design site erection and commissioning of the largest desalination plant in the world in Al Taweelah B. In 1996 Corrado joined ANSALDO Energia as Director of Desalination and Water Projects with responsibilities in Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

Additional Information
Corrado has been a member of IDA since 1989 and has been a member of the IDA board since 1999. In 2002 he was elected first Vice president of IDA and during his mandate he has been instrumental in the development of many IDA activities including the formation of the Australasian Desalination Association. In the last few years we have seen natural resources getting scarcer while ”new water” or desalinated water is becoming cheaper. In this challenging but stimulating environment the pace of technological innovation has to be maintained in order to turn a severe wastewater fresh water balance into a full fresh water planet. IDA can play a vital role in this task by offering continuous support to technological development and liaising between the academic, political and industrial sectors involved in water and desalination and becoming a leading reference point for technological development in water business.
