Welcome to LANXESS Corporation
Most of Bayer Chemicals was combined with parts of Bayer Polymers to form a new company named LANXESS Corporation, which began doing business on July 1, 2004. LANXESS will continue the proud tradition of providing quality products and services to the most success-driven customers in the industry.

LANXESS Corporation
A new name in chemicals, plastics, and rubber has arrived on the global scene. Most of Bayer Chemicals and parts of Bayer Polymers have been combined to form a new company called LANXESS.

In the United States, LANXESS Corporation began doing business on July 1, 2004. The name LANXESS comes from the French verb "lancer", to launch, and the English noun "success." LANXESS is a global manufacturer of synthetic rubber and rubber chemicals, plastics including semi-crystalline and styrenics, and a broad range of basic and fine chemicals.

LANXESS Product Stewardship
LANXESS Product Stewardship is an ongoing program custom designed for safe handling of LANXESS products from research and development, through production, packaging and distribution, handling and storage, and recycling and disposal activities.

Research and Development
As part of our product stewardship program at LANXESS, we focus on identifying and developing ways to reduce adverse impacts on health, safety, and the environment, beginning at the initial development stage of a product.

We consider the following during the research and development stage:

  • Characterize and evaluate steps to reduce product and process risks 
  • Consider steps to reduce the use of hazardous raw materials 
  • Minimize resources used and waste streams 
  • Reduce energy use 
  • Reduce need for disposal of product and packaging 
  • Consider customer needs

Production
At LANXESS we evaluate the manufacturing process, and consider potential health, environment, and safety issues when choosing production equipment and deciding the best practices to use in manufacturing. This includes ways to reduce or eliminate process waste.

We consider the following during the production stage:

  • Customer needs pertaining to products, quality of products, regulatory issues, and health, environment and safety issues 
  • Safety practices of our employees, our customers’ employees, and other downstream employees 
  • Practices and capabilities of our suppliers 
  • Practices to protect the environment, our neighbors and community

The Performance Chemicals segment is made up of various business units that specialize in the production of a broad spectrum of processing chemicals and chemical intermediates for many different industries.

The Performance Chemicals segment comprises the following business units:

Material Protection Products

The Material Protection Business Unit offers you very broad product lines in industrial biocides and preservatives. With applications ranging from wood protection to beverages, corrosion control to personal care, root resistance to antifouling, we are your source for expert solutions and products.

No matter what you need to protect, you can rely on the Preventol® range of bactericides, fungicides, insecticides and corrosion inhibitors.

The Material Protection Business Unit provides state of the art products, objective and efficient technical consulting, registration management and research and development.

Functional Chemicals

Baypure® is the new concept for water treatment. With this new product range LANXESS Chemicals offers efficient and environmentally friendly solutions for complexation, dispersing and crystal modification.

The products of our Baypure® range are based on nature. Consequently, they have a rapid biodegradability and an excellent ecotoxicological profile. Their environmental performance has recently been underscored: independent bodies have awarded major environmental prizes to products based on Baypure®.

Leather

In the fashion business, trends are moving quickly. With designers needing colorful, smooth, and quality material, leather provides an exciting material capable of meeting the demands of each season. Leather manufacturers can trust the support of LANXESS Leather.

LANXESS is among the few suppliers to the leather industry who has an almost complete chemical product range for the manufacturing of leather. Products include inorganic- and synthetic tanning agents, preservatives, tanning and finishing auxiliaries, fatliquors and dyestuffs. Cooperation agreements with Rohm and Haas Company and Seta S/A increase our product range even further.

Coupling our complete product range with the high standard of R&D, LANXESS customers can trust in the Leather Business Unit in virtually every step of leather processing.

Textile Processing Chemicals

As one of the major suppliers in the textile processing industry, LANXESS offers its customers product solutions for the pretreatment process and auxiliaries for dyeing, finishing and textile printing.

We work closely with our customers to develop innovative solutions thus providing them with a competitive advantage. To provide our partners the global service they need, we have established marketing subsidiaries in almost every country of the world. To guarantee timely delivery and efficient technical service, we established production sites and "Competence centres" in every major region of the world.

Paper

In a business where change is occurring so quickly, industry leaders must keep a focused eye on the future and be nimble enough to make necessary adjustments. In doing so, they must select suppliers with a deep commitment to product quality and problem solving.

The Business Unit Paper has that commitment. We apply superior people, technology and know-how to keep our customers coming out winners. The Business Unit Paper provides a solid line of paper colorants, fluorescent whitening agents, sizing and strength chemicals and other papermaking chemicals. You can count on LANXESS as a single source for virtually all of your high-quality paper colorant and chemical needs.

Rhein Chemie

A subsidary of LANXESS, Rhein Chemie serves a wide range of industries, supplying around 4,000 tailor-made active ingredient preparations and chemical specialties for the rubber, lubricant, polymer and polyurethanes industries.

Our products are used in a wide range of applications and the end products can be found in many everyday-life situations. 

The headquarters for our international operations are based in Mannheim, Germany. The technical advisory service offered by Rhein Chemie represents the key to customized precision solutions.

Rubber Chemicals

The Rubber Chemicals Business Unit of LANXESS is a world-renowned manufacturer and supplier of rubber chemicals.

We offer manufacturers of tires and technical rubber articles a wide range of high quality products with excellent processing characteristics.

Our rubber chemicals are generally used to: 

  • enhance the mixing and/or processability of elastomers, blends or their rubber compounds;
  • achieve certain properties in the elastomer or the finished rubber article/latex product, e.g. by means of cross-linking (vulcanization); and/or 
  • protect an end product against effects on its properties or from degradation (e.g. oxidation) under in-service conditions.

The Rubber Chemicals Business Unit also markets rubber chemicals in other areas of use such as the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries, mining, material protection, and fuel and oil applications.

We operate extremely efficient production facilities in different world regions, providing our customers a consistently high level of quality. Our engineers and technical experts are also working continuously to further improve the efficiency of these facilities, enabling us to respond even more sensitively to our customers' requirements.

The Chemical Intermediates segment produces a multitude of chemical products. Our core competencies are research and development and the production and marketing of highly specialized industrial and fine chemicals.

Our products meet very high standards and are used in wide-ranging applications in many everyday products. The Chemical Intermediates segment comprises the following business units:

Basic Chemicals

The Basic Chemicals Business Unit is one of the world's major suppliers of high-quality industrial chemicals. Aromatic compounds have a predominant position in its broad portfolio of products.

Chlorobenzenes, chlorotoluenes and nitrotoluenes, as well as derivatives like nitrochlorobenzenes, cresols, toluidines and monoisocyanates are manufactured in an integrated cluster of production plants. The Basic Chemicals Business Unit is also a major producer of amines, amino alcohols, benzyl products, hydrofluoric acid and sulfuric acid, fluorine compounds, oxidation products like phthalic anhydride and polyols such as trimethylol propane.

Our longstanding manufacturing experience along with our high-quality products form the basis for reliable partnerships with our customers.

Fine Chemicals

The mission of the Business Unit Fine Chemicals is to strengthen LANXESS' position in the development and delivery of innovative, high-quality fine chemicals, agrochemicals, pharmaceutical active ingredients and services. Our goal is to assist our worldwide customers with the safe and cost-effective production of their fine chemical requirements - for quantities from 1 kg up to a multitude of hundreds of tons.

We have developed leading-edge technologies and innovative methods to deliver our high-value processes, materials and services in a cost-effective and timely manner. Inorganic Pigments

In our everyday life, color in design is gaining greater and greater importance. For many decades now, Bayferrox® and Chromoxide pigments have been used as colorants for concrete, rooting tiles, coatings, plastics and paper, as well as special applications such as toners, with a proven track record. High-quality plastics from LANXESS have good durability and dimensional stability. Our portfolio contains an extensive range of products and innovative systems solutions for customers all over the world. 

Our hybrid technology has a particularly promising future. This technology is used to create metal/plastic composites. Combining these two materials makes them far tougher than either material on its own. This innovative, patented technology opens up a range of new possibilities, for example in the transportation sector - from airplanes to automobiles.

Our thermoplastics are also used in virtually all areas of everyday life: in cars, the home and electrical and electronic appliances.

The Engineering Plastics segment comprises the following business units:

Semi-Crystalline Products

Our Durethan® and Pocan® product lines demonstrate strong growth and innovation potential. Our largest customers are in the automotive and electrical industries. Our efficient production plants and intense product and application development make us one of Europe's major providers of semi-crystalline plastic products on today's competitive markets.

Our plastics business is also supported by the fact that we produce our own intermediates. Our production facilities for cyclohexanol/cyclohexanone, caprolactam, adipic acid and glass fibers in Uerdingen and Antwerp are among the largest of their kind in the world.

In the Monofil division, we offer tailored and competent solutions for the high requirements of our customers, regardless of whether they want paper machine felts, fish lines, ropes, or special applications.

Styrenic Resins

The Business Unit Styrenic Resins of LANXESS builds upon more than 50 years of experience in serving the industry and setting new standards to create value for and with our customers. Being present in all important regions with manufacturing facilities and commercial / technical services, we are able to meet global requirements.

The Business Unit Styrenic Resins will continue to support the industry, especially with regard to:

  • High-quality colored products
  • A broad range of specialty grades
  • A dedicated range of standard natural grades

Lustran®/Novodur® ABS and SAN brand names are well recognized and effective in a wide range of applications.

Triax® (ABS-PA Blends) is being developed using a proprietary technology and is used in many innovative applications.

Centrex® (ASA, AES and ASA-PC Blends,) is used mainly in Nafta for outdoor applications requiring excellent weather resistance.

Performance Rubber

LANXESS has many years of experience with synthetic rubber and rubber chemicals. The first synthetic rubber was discovered and patented by the original predecessor of today's Performance Rubber segment.

LANXESS customers - tire makers and manufacturers of technical rubber articles - create high-performance finished products from synthetic rubber. Our rubber products are used, for example, in buildings, vehicles, automobile tires, shoes and the electronics industry.

The Performance Rubber segment comprises the following business units:

Poly-Butadiene Rubber

The Polybutadiene Rubber Business Unit of LANXESS is one of the world's major manufacturers of the specialty rubbers polybutadiene (PBR) and solution-styrene polybutadiene (SSBR). The rubbers we produce are sold under the trade names Buna® (CB, VSL, SL, BL) and Taktene®.

Polybutadiene rubber accounts for 24.5 % of the world's production of synthetic rubber. Approximately 70 % of total production is used in tire compounds, with another 20 % being used for modifying plastics (HIPS). With our product portfolio, we are able to offer our customers specialized solutions in both markets.

Besides neodymium and cobalt products, our product range also includes lithium-catalyzed polybutadiene. With three production sites located in Dormagen (Germany), Port Jérôme (France) and Orange (USA), we are well positioned to serve our customers worldwide.

With an innovative product portfolio and efficient links between marketing, production and research, we are able to provide products of a consistently high level of quality for our customers. We also consider reliable delivery and dependable performance to be the cornerstones of a long and successful working relationship with our customers.

Butyl Rubber

Butyl is currently the only rubber to be impermeable to air. This property is the starting point of our activities. The product family comprises three main types:

  • Butyl 
  • Bromobutyl
  • Chlorobutyl

Technical Rubber Products

The Technical Rubber Products Business Unit of LANXESS is a globally operating supplier of specialty elastomers for the rubber-processing industry.

Our broad product range is tailored to meet the requirements of a wide variety of applications in automotive engineering, construction, electronics, mechanical engineering, industrial plants, oil exploration, aviation, domestic goods and many other industries.
