Synopsis

The winners of the Israeli recent 100million m3/year Ashkelon project, the VID consortium, set a world record for the lowest selling price of desalinated seawater. They were awarded a contract for their bid that priced the cost of desalinated water, based on Reverse Osmosis technology, at less than 50 US cents/m3. An intriguing question is: can the cost of desalinated water be pushed further down? The present paper analyses possible directions for reducing costs in seawater, brackish and wastewater membrane processes. This analysis is accompanied by some highlights on researches conducted at the Rabin Desalination Laboratory, aiming to push the limits of desalination.
