Synopsis

The AEM models WhAEM and GFLOW were used to generate potentiometric surface maps of the water-table aquifer in the Wadena area of central Minnesota. The modeled potentiometric maps, created using area stream head data and readily available geologic data on the area, conformed well to the potentiometric surface maps developed from comprehensive field data collected by the USGS. The models’ potentiometric surface map shows the same overall trend of regional groundwater flow to the northeast and local flow strongly influenced area stream. Comfortable that the AEM model’s representation of groundwater flow in the water-table aquifer was representative of groundwater flow in the aquifer, the models were used as a tool to delineated composite wellhead protection areas for two public water supply wells. When facing groundwater projects in similar hydrogeologic conditions and with less than ideal field data, AEM models may provide the edge necessary to develop an understanding of groundwater flow in the aquifer
