Biography

Norman Howell has been involved in all aspects of trenchless technology for the last twenty seven years. After gaining an honours degree in Engineering Geology at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne he began his career within the Tunnelling Division of Tarmac Construction Ltd gaining extensive experience of conventional tunnel construction in many parts of the world over an 8 year period. This was followed by a three year period spent working in Eygpt for French Contractor Polysius S A as Designers Representative on two green-field Cement Factory Projects. He then joined D J Ryan & Sons Ltd, who are well known as developers and patent holders of the pipebursting technique and was responsible over a period of 18 years for all aspects of the company’s involvement in Trenchless Technology which includes equipment design, manufacture and sales, systems development and all contract services relating to trenchless pipeline rehabilitation and installation.

In April 2002 he joined Subterra and is responsible for the management of all Specialist Trenchless Activities undertaken by the company, which involves Research & Development, Product Manufacture, Technical Support and Project Execution. He also manages all of Subterra’s Overseas interests that involves licensing specialist techniques and providing technical support.

He has presented numerous technical papers at both UK and International Conferences on a variety of subjects relating Trenchless Technology and is a guest Lecturer at Manchester Business School and The University of East London. He has been a member of the UKSTT since its inception having previously been a member of the ISTT from 1986 and has been involved with the Council since 1994. His role within the council has included work on the membership, training and events sub-committees. He is the Immediate Past Chairman of the United Kingdom Society for Trenchless Technology. He is a Chartered Geologist (U K) and a member of the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM).
