Kinetico Incorporated is a dynamic and interesting organization dedicated to providing quality water to people like you throughout the world. Learn more about Kinetico by choosing a link below!

The History of Kinetico
Kinetico Incorporated was founded in 1970 by two engineers with a dream who pioneered the development of non-electric, fully automatic water treatment systems. Kinetico evolved from the Tangent Company, a small consulting design firm, into a global organization of independent Dealers, international distributors and manufacturer's representatives who represent the company in more than 100 countries.

Through the dedication of its founders, employees and distribution network, Kinetico has experienced tremendous success. The company has grown from a two-man, creative undertaking into a strong and dynamic organization. Innovative technology and a strong commitment to customer satisfaction have distinguished the company and positioned Kinetico as a leader in today's ever-changing water treatment industry.

A look back in time reveals Kinetico's inspiring history. It was indeed "water" that brought Kinetico's two founders, Bill Prior and Jim Kewley, together. Although one would initially suspect a common interest in conditioned water, it was actually a mutual love for sailing that united the two. Bill's interest involved sailboat design, while Jim's sailing enthusiasm stemmed from an excursion across the Atlantic Ocean.

One day, Bill received a request from a friend to design an innovative water conditioner valve. He approached his friend Jim Kewley, the sailing enthusiast, and they agreed to form a company to design the valve.

Although both men were engineers, neither had experience in the water treatment industry. Bill and Jim's research generated new ideas and created the determination to build a system better than those already on the market. They based their water conditioner design on the following principles:

A water conditioner should:

  • operate based on the demand for treated water.
  • provide a continuous supply of soft water, even while the equipment is regenerating or cleaning itself.
  • operate without using electricity for safe, simple and reliable service.

Throughout the years, Kinetico Incorporated has continued to develop and expand its product line. The company has evolved into a multifaceted organization that produces a wide variety of water treatment equipment for a multitude of applications. Kinetico's innovative product line now covers all major water treatment markets.

RESIDENTIAL
Kinetico manufactures complete systems that improve water quality for general use as well as those which provide high quality drinking water for consumption. Kinetico quality water systems are used in rural, problem water areas and where water is supplied by municipally controlled water utilities. They are widely renowned for their quality and have earned numerous Best Buy designations from Consumers Digest and high marks from another leading consumer magazine. They are also used and recommended by Dean Johnson and Robin Hartl, hosts of the popular home improvement television series, Hometime, and have been featured on numerous television programs including This Old House, Bob Villa, Home Again, Good Morning America, and The Today Show.

COMMERCIAL
Kinetico systems are utilized in a wide variety of residential and commercial applications that include restaurants, hotels, carwashes, hospitals and others. You've probably used Kinetico water and didn't even realize it!

INDUSTRIAL
Kinetico is also a world leader in the field of industrial water treatment and recycling. Systems are designed for the printed circuit board, semiconductor, micro-electronics, aerospace, metal finishing and other industries whose waste water is among the most contaminated and challenging in water pollution management. Kinetico's high purity water systems produce highly refined water used to manufacture products you use everyday!

MUNICIPAL
Kinetico also manufactures and sells packaged filtration systems to public water utilities that provide safe drinking water (exceeding quality required by the Surface Water Treatment Rule) to small communities. The Kinetico technology uses an exclusive filtration product named Macrolite, a state-of-the-art ceramic filter media jointly developed by Kinetico and 3M, that has proven very effective in the removal of microorganisms from water. Because of the success of Macrolite, Kinetico now incorporates it in residential, commercial and industrial products, as well.

Today, Kinetico's rapid growth and impact on the marketplace have greatly transformed it from the small enterprise started by two resourceful engineers in 1970. But in spite of all of its changes, Kinetico has managed to keep the same innovative approach to solving water problems, the same dedication to quality and the same commitment to people that were the basis for its original success decades ago. Kinetico looks forward to continued prosperity as it continues to provide people all over the world with better water for years to come.

Industrial Products
Saving Water, Saving Chemicals, Saving Money
Kinetico's unique technologies have allowed industrial customers worldwide to receive the tremendous benefits of water recycling, hazardous waste minimization, metals recovery and high purity water. Click here to find out how Kinetico helped Metal Seal and Products, Inc. in Willoughby, Ohio produce a better product more efficiently while meeting the proposed MP&M regulations

Recycling industrial process water is not only environmentally beneficial, but it is typically more cost effective than conventional treatment and discharge. Through application of stream segregation and appropriate treatment technologies, high purity water is produced for continuous reuse, metals are recovered and solid wastes reduced. As a pioneer in industrial water recycling, Kinetico continues to innovate new designs for cost effective recycling and compliance.

Conventional Waste Water Treatment

Kinetico has a strategic partnership with DMP Corporation to offer our customers the very best in conventional waste water treatment systems and controls.

Ion Exchange
Kinetico has specialized in ion exchange technology for 30 years, using the "Kinetico Process" - patented control valve, high efficiency, counterflow, automatic regeneration - delivering the lowest cost of ownership available.

Ion exchange is a process that removes dissolved ions from solution using synthetic resins to attract cations or anions, then releases (exchanges) counter-ions until resin is exhausted. As solution flows through a resin bed, ion exchange occurs. The process continues by regeneration or replacement of ions on the resin.

Ion exchange is used in many industrial applications for various purposes.

  • Improves the quality of incoming tap water
  • Purifies and recycles contaminated rinse water
  • Eliminates contamination prior to discharge
  • Extends the life of a process solution

Kinetico's 30-500 gpm CIX (complete ion exchange) and KDI (deionization) product line uses high efficiency counterflow regeneration to reduce chemical consumption, waste volumes and operational costs.

Membrane/Separation
There are several membrane separation technologies, each characterized by different capabilities and operating specifications. Membrane types listed by pore size from largest to smallest.

All Kinetico membrane separation systems employ a cross flow filtration process. The flow of influent or contaminated feed water is pumped through the system at a relatively high velocity perpendicular to the membrane surface. The cross flow helps to prevent a build up of rejected or filtered materials on the membrane surface.

Evaporation
Evaporation technology reduces liquid volumes by using heat and in some cases reduced pressures.

Atmospheric
Atmospheric evaporation is used to reduce the volume of solution by applying heat and allowing water to evaporate into air leaving behind the contaminants or concentrates. The evaporative process can be aided by atomizing sprays and forced air volumes that increase the surface area of the liquid requiring reduction. Depending upon the waste involved, some areas where strict air discharge requirements exist, permits must be obtained to use the technology. Options are available to condense and recover the evaporated water.

Vacuum
Vacuum evaporation is a more advanced process than atmospheric evaporation used to reduce the volume of solution as well as recover water. Acting like a traditional still, the process involves boiling solution at a reduced heat, reducing the pressure of the solution below atmosphere (vacuum), collecting steam and condensing it as a purified solution while the constituent without water remains. Single, double, and multistage evaporators are available.

Filtration/Adsorption
Filtration is the process of removing suspended material (or solids) from a solution. Kinetico offers many methods of filtration. For industrial applications, pressure filtration is generally used. Contaminated or raw fluid is fed under pressure through a media bed (bag or cartridge) made of porous material. In media pressure filtration, backwashing (passing of water in the opposite direction of flow) is used to free the bed of captured contaminants.

Electrochemical
Electrowinning/Metal Recovery
Electrowinning/Metal Recovery is an electroplating type process where metals are plated onto electrodes from a solution.

In an integrated waste water treatment or recycling system, electrowinning is used to remove metals that have been accumulated on ion exchange resins, or metals present in process chemistry solutions that are being discarded.

The benefit of electrowinning is removal of a potentially hazardous metal from a waste stream and preventing it from becoming hazardous sludge. Operating costs can be decreased by reducing the volume, costs and liabilities associated with sludge disposal. Electrowinning is typically used to recover copper in printed circuit board manufacturing for acid copper plating, microtech dumps and cation exchange regenerations.

Chemical/Conventional
The oldest and most widely applied method of wastewater treatment involves the addition of chemicals to alter the make-up constituents of a waste. Although generally downsized, the process continues to play an important role in newer systems used today. Automated controls and advanced instrumentation have improved this technology in recent years. Kinetico has a strategic partnership with DMP Corporation to offer our customers the very best in conventional waste water treatment systems and controls.

Automated Controls
Automating and monitoring operations are key to the application of newer integrated water recycling and wastewater treatment systems. Kinetico's in-house expertise includes designing, programming and installing PLC controls, touch screen interface panels and remote monitoring. Specialists in electrical engineering and technical field service provide quick response for system adjustments and modifications when needed.
