Synopsis

The existing urban storm water management facilities are often inadequate to achieve the original flood control objectives because of system sedimentation, sea level rise, and unexpectedly larger and faster runoff input. The existing facilities also need to be reengineered to meet the new and increasingly more stringent water quality requirements. This paper will describe four research projects that were recently conducted at Rutgers University to facilitate reengineering the urban storm management facilities. These include retrofit of urban storm water detention basins for water quality improvement, flushing of combined sewer sediment, detection of sanitary sewage at storm water outfalls, and establishment of the pre-construction drainage condition for urban redevelopment projects
