Synopsis

The ever-increasing thirst of the world population and its industries on natural resources is especially crucial in the light of the limited sources of water for potable use. In this context the natural freshwater bodies and also the artificial reservoirs provide a precious resource which is constantly under threat from human impact. In order to ensure a stable and sustainable use of water for various often contradicting purposes (drinking water resource, irrigation means, recreation object, flood or drought prevention objectives, fisheries) a reliable management tool is necessary to predict the impact of human intentions both in the surrounding watershed and the water body itself. This article provides some details about recent scientific and management activities to combine the existing inter-disciplinary knowledge on the physical, chemical and biological processes into a model system. This chain of models has been applied already to very different objects, two examples are given in this paper. The first looks at the possibility to manage the water quality of large natural lakes, the second reports about the challenges of optimising reservoir management to ensure both high quality potable water supply and a sufficient storage capacity in the case of flood events.
