Synopsis

Sustainable Development is still attracting significant attention as countries and organisations try to determine what this may mean and how to deliver it. We must look at both the higher-level issues and try to determine what we should do, but at the same time we should also look for immediate solutions and how to progress opportunities.
This paper looks at both issues, what we should be doing in water management from an industrial perspective and also some of the technical opportunities and solutions that are on our doorstep and we can do now. Higher-level approaches may not deliver immediate solutions and we need both clear strategy and clear demonstrable beneficial progress.

However, as Albert Einstein helped us see “The problems of today will not be solved by the same thinking that created the problems in the first place”. Therefore, this paper tries to explore the process, and gives some examples where companies can practice lateral thinking, or thinking outside the box or even New Thinking (see www.worldcentrefornewthinking.org) or other paradigms you may prefer.
Without clear ways to demonstrate improvement along the way we may find it harder to show companies and stakeholders that the pursuit of Sustainability will lead somewhere.
