Horizontal Directional Drilling Projects that Construct Septic Sewer System, Manholes, Gravity Sewers, Septic Tanks and Pipelines Using Vortex Pumps and Sewer Pipes

This project is located at the Irvine Regional Park in Orange County California. The project is designed to serve existing park facilities, converting them from the existing septic sewer system, which is currently in use. The project site includes 12 restrooms, maintenance yard, horse stables, residence house, nature center, various buildings and public zoo.

Irvine Regional Park Sewer Conversion, County of Orange- - Horizontal Directional Drilling Project

There are two portions to this construction project, the County Park portion and the public portion. The County Park portion of the new construction includes mainline, laterals and manholes. The Public portion of new construction includes a lift station and a force main. The lift station is a 270 gallons-per-minute duplex submersible lift station consisting of two side rail submersible 20 horsepower vortex pumps. 2,290 lineal feet of 6-inch PVC forcemain and 9,870 lineal feet of 8-inch PVC gravity sewer and laterals including manholes were installed. Other aspects of the project included jacking 800 powered emergency generator, SBC and SCE service connections, demolition of the existing Irvine Regional Park submersible pumping station, abandonment of existing sewer pipes, septic tanks and disposal fields and preservation/ protection of existing trees.

ExxonMobil- Horizontal Directional Drilling Project

Los Angeles and Long Beach have been making adjustments to their ports in order to bring in larger ships to these areas. One of the changes taking place at the Ports of LA and Long Beach involved lowering all pipelines crossing waterways. This project for ExxonMobil required the installation of a pipeline bundle under the main channel near the East Basin in the Port of Los Angeles. ARB crews horizontally directionally drilled and installed 1800-ft. of 1-24`` and 2-10`` pipelines. The 3 pipelines were welded up separately in strings and then bundled together as the drilling rig pulled them across. Surrounded by heavy trucking and the loading and unloading of cargo containers, workspace was very limited.

Anchorage Alaska- Horizontal Directional Drilling Project

The HDD Group was in Alaska in 2004, on a project for the Alaska Pipeline Company`s 20-inch Beluga Transmission Pipeline Relocation Project. The project involved a horizontal directional drill under the Susitna River and the installation of 4,350-ft of 20-inch pipe. This work was located in a very remote area west of Anchorage and the Cook Inlet in the Susitna Flats State Game Refuge. 26 miles of ice road was constructed to get to the project location. Two large fabric structures were erected on ice work pads to protect the crew and drilling equipment from sub-zero temperatures. The work was done during February and March, with temperatures ranging between minus 15 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The pipeline was successfully installed and the equipment and structures were demobilized before spring thaw without damage to the sensitive environment.

The Port of Los Angeles- LA Department of Water and Power, Waterlines- - Horizontal Directional Drilling Project

ARB, Inc. has now completed eleven large diameter horizontal directional drills in the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach over the last ten years. Three of these horizontal directional drills for the Port of Los Angeles were accomplished in 2004. The three most recent projects were performed under two contracts. One contract was for the installation of 3,033 feet of 36-inch steel casing with 30-inch HDPE carrier pipe for reclaimed water as well as 1,505 feet of a bundle of six 8-inch HDPE electrical conduits. A separate contract called for the installation of 2,645 feet of 30-inch steel casing with a 26-inch HDPE liner.
