Arsenic Removal Process
GEH Adsorbent

GEH Adsorbent Used for the Removal of Arsenic and Phosphates from Water Bodies

Germany, as the first country in the world, lowered the national drinking water standard for arsenic down to 10µg/l in 1990 and other countries followed. The WHO recommended an arsenic standard of 10µg/l in 1993. The European Community set the standard at 10µg/l to be enforced in the member countries in 2004.

Given to this background the GEH Wasserchemie GmbH & Co. KG in cooperation with the TU Berlin, Dept of Water Quality control, has developed an iron oxide based adsorbent for use in simple treatment technique. Another reason is consideration of available space. Most of treatment plants were installed in already existing buildings, where the space for new installations is generally restricted and very compact treatment equipment is needed. The adsorbent is commercially available since 1997 from the company GEH Wasserchemie GmbH & Co.KG in Germany. The media is registered under the trade mark GEH.

The first treatment plant for drinking water treatment with the GEH process started to operate in August 1997. Since then it has been successfully applied in around 2000 plants all over the world. The flow rates of these treatment plants varies between 2 – 19.000 m3/day and the arsenic concentrations are up to 1.000 µg/l in the raw water.

Our Range of Services includes:

  • Manufacture and distribution of GEH
  • Fixed bed system design for water and waste water treatment
  • Studies on water treatment processes
  • Laboratory and pilot trials
  • Overall system planning
  • Manufacture and distribution of GEH- standard-adsorbed vessels (treatment capacity between 5 - 60 m3/h)

Arsenic Removal

GEH was developed for low-cost and efficient removal of arsenic in fixed bed reactors. It is pure ferric hydroxides granulate which is synthesised from high quality raw materials. GEH has extremely high adsorption capacities for arsenic and phosphates with approx. 75% porosity and a specific surface area of 250-300 m2/g. GEH is a granule with grain sizes between 0,3 – 2,0 mm. GEH is used in fixed-bed adsorbers. The plants do not need additional energy for operating because the water is simply driven through one or more adsorber vessels. This technique combines simple treatment equipment, less maintenance and safe operation over a long period. The GEH adsorption process requires no chemical additives of any kind.

The main characteristics of the GEH are:

  • Grain size: 0, 32 mm – 2,0 mm
  • Specific surface: 250 – 300 m²/g
  • Porosity of grains: 75 %
  • Density of grains: 1.5 kg/dm³
  • Adsorption capacity: Up to 55 g/kg

GEH is a media which combines the advantages from the arsenic removal techniques “flocculation” and “adsorption on activated alumina”. Apart from the removal of arsenic in small water utilities, it is also applicable for the removal of some other elements and water constituents like phosphorous, selenium and antimony.

In order to predict treatment capacities and performance of the application with GEH, the GEH GmbH & Co. KG developed a program to calculate this data from the raw water quality. It is the aim of this tool to use only a small set of quality parameters, which are always and easily available.

Due to this special kinetic behaviour, the treatment capacity and lifetime is higher in the most plants than predicted by the kinetic modeling tool. The only maintenance work fort he staff is the regular backwashing of the adsorber vessel with a frequency of once per month. Besides this, the media has a lifetime of two years and, once exhausted, will be exchanged and disposed by the supplier of the media.

The general advantages of the GEH treatment process are:

  • Simple treatment equipment with low maintenance requirements
  • High reliability, even with varying raw water parameters
  • Dosing of chemicals is not required
  • No production of sludge
  • Minimised concentrations in the treated water

GEH Process

GEH adsorbent was specially developed for low cost and efficient removal of arsenic from natural water. In some regions, ground water is contaminated with arsenic of geological origin. GEH is a pure ferric hydroxide granulates which is synthesised from high quality raw materials. It emits no hazardous substances into the water and does not affect its pH. It has extremely high adsorption capacities up to 60 g/Kg for arsenic and phosphate. GEH is a high performance adsorbent which is ideally suited for use in fixed bed adsorption units.

Fixed bed adsorbers operated with GEH do not require pumps, valves or other moving parts in their design, therefore minimizing maintenance and downtime. No personnel is required for operation-in fact in many cases no control system or electric power supply is required. In properly designed systems, GEH can be used for up to 36 months before saturation .GEH provides a high filtrating rate therefore allowing extremely compact and economically system construction. The GEH adsorption process requires no chemical additives of any kind.

Disposal

After saturation of its adsorption capacity, GEH remains a solid granular material and can be disposed of without further treatment. Unlike sludge generating process, saturated GEH does not require conditioning and has low water content which reduces waste disposal costs. In addition, GEH can be regenerated and reused in some applications.

Applications

  • Removal of Arsenic III and IV from natural and waste water
  • Phosphate removal for sewage treatment
  • Phosphate elimination from lakes, basins and ponds
  • Removal of Selenium, Antimony Copper, Chromate
  • Removal of dissolved organic matter

Apart from the arsenic removal, GEH adsorbs the following dissolved substances:

  • Antimony
  • Molybdenum
  • Copper
  • Phosphate
  • Lead
  • Uranium
  • Selenium
  • Vanadium

The adsorption density of GEH for these substances depends on the raw water chemistry. At present GEH is used for arsenic removal from drinking water, removal of trace metals, phosphate removal from surface water and in aquaristics, antimony removal and elimination of copper from rain water.
