Synopsis

The use of industrially manufactured nitrogen fertilizers has seen a rapid and large increase in the production of maize, wheat and rice in developed countries between 1960 and 1980.

This study outlines how research indicates how the amount of contamination from fertilizer varies dependent on the amount of fertilizer applied, and the characteristics of the soils, crops, climate, and the receiving water bodies.
