Synopsis

According to the UN Millennium Development Goals the number of child deaths should be reduced by 66% in 2015. Yet scientists that met in Bellagio are very skeptical about this. They say we are making improvements, but particularly among the poor the reduction is flattening out. Here information could make a clear difference. It is not likely that these children would have died if their parents would have been better informed, and would have known about simple prevention measures, such as the importance of hand washing. A lot of information exists, but is not available at the right time, of the right quality, tailored to the right gender, tailored to local problems and needs, it is not shared nor used. At the same time the Internet has been inundated with new gateways and portals on water over the last couple of years. Unfortunately, many of them only serve to confuse instead of help people who search the web for water-related information. Part of the problem resides in defining what constitutes a “portal” and what doesn’t. Another issue is that most portals do not seem to have a clear notion of their intended visitors - and their motives for visiting. In the developing world local intermediaries are needed to help connect communities to the information available in their countries and on the web and to connect dedicated Internet community of practices in water, environmental sanitation and hygiene with the realities in the field. The IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre is assisting partners in the developing world in this process by providing access to relevant information and knowledge and helping to build local capacities (see www.irc.nl).
