Across the globe Ashbrook Simon-Hartley solutions are also playing a key part in countries' economic growth enabling them to meet the demands of growing populations and rapid commercial, industrial and infrastructure development.

Ashbrook Simon-Hartley is a global company with operations on four continents and customers around the world. Major service hubs are operated in the U.S., the U.K., Dubai, and Chile, with local and regional representation in virtually every part of the world.

Process Systems

Ashbrook Simon-Hartley's process capabilities draw on a comprehensive range of technologies to create effective and efficient solutions for water and wastewater treatment applications.  With over 2,000 industrial and municipal installations, ISO 9001 certified Ashbrook Simon-Hartley has the experience to provide high performance, quality solutions.

  • Ultra-Violet Disinfection: The reliability of Simon Hartley Quay UV microwave lamps brings significant operating cost savings. Simon Hartley Quay UV bulbs last at least three times longer than low or medium pressure lamps and a minimum life of 3 years is guaranteed. Replacement cost is also significantly less, so the Simon Hartley Quay UV system is by far the most cost-effective technology for wastewater or potable water disinfection.

Simon Hartley Quay UV microwave technology combines the advantages of low and medium pressure bulbs into one electrode-less lamp. The result is low temperature, high output operation with much greater reliability and substantially reduced disinfection costs:

    - Instant light - microwave power is instant - no warm up period
    - No fade - constant performance throughout lamp life, no tailing off with ageing
    - High output - only a third of the number of lamps of a low pressure system
    - High Intensity Low pressure - peak emission at 245nm for germicidal disinfection efficiency
    - Cool running - no baking on of residues, simple cleaning, no cooling required
    - Long Life - guaranteed 28,000 hours, expect 5 years
  • Sequencing Batch Reactor: The SBR Plus combines all the steps of a conventional treatment plant with biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal in a single reactor tank. Typical applications are where space is limited or where variable in-flows need to be processed.

SBRs can be thought of as an activated sludge system, which 'operates in time rather than in space'. By replacing the three separate steps of clarification, biological treatment and settlement with a timed sequence in a single basin, the footprint required is significantly reduced.

Compared with a conventional plant it also offers the flexibility of control to accommodate varying flows and influent quality. The timing of any step in the process - fill, aerate, settle, decant - can be adjusted at any time to cater for such variations and meet effluent discharge requirements.

Unique to the Ashbrook Simon-Hartley system is the SBR plus decanter's V-Notch Weir positioning technology that prevents solids and scum entering the final effluent decanted away from the basin. V-Notch Weir technology incorporates the rugged three-way multi-jack for infinite decanter positioning control.

Decanter sizes from 68 m3/hr to 1,590 m3/hr are available, multiple decanters can be used where higher decant rates are required.

Package Sewage Treatment: Packaged sewage treatment plants combine all the steps of a conventional treatment plant in a containerized enclosed unit. Typical applications are remote areas serving small populations where they offer a far more cost-effective solution than construction of conventional plants.

A range of sizes is offered to cater for flows from 11.4 m3/day (46 p/e) to 380 m3/day (1,500 p/e). The standard design of the packaged sewage treatment plant allows the system designs to be tailored to suit the clients application.

Packaged sewage treatment plant options include:

- Tanks - surge or sludge holding tanks
- Anoxic retention time
- Aeration time
- Disinfection - tablet chlorinator or UV
- Tertiary treatment filters

Various sewage treatment processes can be incorporated into the standard packaged sewage treatment plant, for example:

- Conventional activated sludge
- Sequencing Batch Reactor
- Membrane Bio-Reactor
- Moving Bed Bio-Reactor

Membrane Bio-Reactor: Integrated Membrane Activated Sludge (IMAS) Technology

Membrane Bio-Reactors, which do away with the need for a final clarifier and the space it takes up, are increasingly being used to bring down the size of sewage treatment plants and improve the quality of effluent produced. Whereas conventional MBRs use direct immersion, the IMAS process maintains separate biological and membrane processes to eliminate fouling problems and associated high-energy consumption.

With IMAS the biological and membrane processes are individually controlled and optimized:

  • Pre-membrane particle management - located in the reactor tank reduces the level of MLSS (Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids) reaching the membrane by 90%. This in turn reduces the membrane area required.
  • Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes - in a low fouling environment allows for low resistance properties to enable much higher flow rates and less process down time due to fouling.

IMAS MBR - Membrane quality effluent with

  • Reduced screening - 6mm screens significantly reduce screenings and disposal issues
  • No MLSS recirculation pump
  • No air scour blower pump
  • 65% less membrane area compared to conventional MBR
  • 85% less energy consumption
  • No oversized blowers - efficient oxygen transfer
  • No operator training issues
  • Smaller equalization basins

Dewatering Technologies: Ashbrook Simon-Hartley offers the most cost-effective and high performance sludge treatment solutions for every possible municipal and industrial application

The Aquabelt range of gravity belt thickeners are designed to take any kind of sludge and thicken to 3 to 5% dry solids. For further dewatering the Klampress range of belt filter presses can be relied on to produce a consistent 25%+ dry solids cake.

As the needs of industry and sewage treatment plants develop over time, with ever-changing processes and tightening regulations, so does the range of solutions offered. In addition to constant development of the core Aquabelt and Klampress ranges you will find many examples of the company's continued innovation in the product profiles provided here.

- Belt Filter Press

Robust design, quality engineering and high performance make the Klampress the industry standard for belt filter press technology. Compared with centrifuges they offer a host of financial and operational advantages:

  • Low power consumption, typically 10% of a comparable throughput centrifuge
  • Low polymer consumption
  • Easy installation on a small footprint
  • Low operating costs and no need for major overhauls

Since its creation the Klampress and Winklepress concepts have been continuously developed to meet, and frequently, exceed customers dewatering demands. In addition to the core range of two-belt models, recent introduction of the 3-belt Klampress and Europress ranges justify the claim that whatever the dewatering challenge there is always a Klampress to meet it.

  • Klampress: Manufactured in stainless steel Klampress frames are clearly built for long life and its design includes unique engineering features for high performance:

Variable incline discharge ramp for achievement of very high cake dry solids output, which other makes struggle to match.

Proprietary polymer mixer for immediate and precise adjustment of polymer rate and clog free continuous operation.

Smartpress belt tensioning and alignment system which automatically accommodates variation in sludge feed to ensure consistent and continuous output to pre-set requirements.

With five models to choose from with a range of belt width and roller configurations there is a Klampress to match any application.

Options

-Extended deck for very high throughput applications
-High pressure version for ultra high solids cake production
-Full enclosure for odour prevention
-Customised configurations engineered for unique applications.

  • 3-Belt Klampress: By combining thickening and dewatering decks in one unit feed sludge only has to be mixed with polymer once, so polymer consumption can be halved. Installed on a footprint of half that required for separate belt thickening and de-watering the 3-Belt Klampress is also the most convenient solution where space is at a premium. The 3-Belt Klampress is specifically designed to take dilute sludge feeds (< 1.5% dry solids) and dewater right up to 25% dry solids in one process.
  • WINKLEPRESS Belt Filter Press Technology: After all of the tests are in, and the studies complete, the Winklepress stands alone as the clear winner in high-performance dewatering. The Ashbrook Simon-Hartley Winklepress combines advanced, high-durability engineering, precision workmanship and long-life materials into a single masterpiece of performance and value.

By maximizing gravitational forces, linear and shear pressure effects, and Ashbrook Simon-Hartley's proprietary engineering features-such as floating chicanes, dandy rollers and precision polymer mixers - the Winklepress is able to deliver throughput rates unequaled by other technologies. Other technologies typically have limited process flexibility, with little room for rheological variations in the influent. The Ashbrook Simon-Hartley Winklepress maximizes performance with multiple and distinct processing zones - taking advantage of numerous dewatering strategies - resulting in exponentially increased dry cake results.

- Belt Thickening

Ashbrook Simon-Hartley offers several thickening technologies covering the full range of sludge throughputs:

Aquabelt Technologies® - Provides solutions and flexibility for municipal and industrial applications while providing the most efficient means of thickening dilute process streams.

  • The Aquabelt® STD
  • Aquabelt® STD - Enclosed
  • Aquabelt® COMPACT
  • Aquabelt® COMPACT - Enclosed
  • ABCT Aquabelt ® - gravity belt thickeners for throughputs from 15 to 150 m³/hr.
  • DAB System - 'in vessel' thickeners for throughputs from 1.5 to 12.5 m³/hr.

All technologies have the flexibility to process SAS, primary or mixed sludge and take sludge feeds as thin as 0.5% ds. In typical applications DABs and Aquabelts are used to produce a thickened sludge of 3 to 6% ds but have the flexibility to thicken up to 7 to 8% ds where required.

  • DAB System: The DAB's design is elegant in its engineering simplicity, combining the principles of thickening and settlement for low capital and operating cost.

Rugged stainless steel construction and automatic controls allow outdoor installation and unmanned operation. And with the minimum of moving parts it is highly dependable for long periods of maintenance-free operation. The DAB System opens up the possibility of thickening sludge on-site at remote or smaller STWs. It is a very low cost solution for local thickening that yields significant savings by dramatically reducing the volume of sludge transported away for centralised thickening.

  • ABCT Aquabelt: With its enclosed canopy and 'no spill' belt system the ABCT Aquabelt eliminates odour and is ideal for unmanned operation. The result is all the performance and convenience you would expect from a drum plus the added advantages of:

-Low polymer consumption
-Stainless steel construction to allow outdoor installation
-Completely visible and easily adjustable process

With the new generation of ABCT Aquabelts 'spill free' operation is guaranteed by their new auto-sensing belt tensioning and alignment system. As you would expect the ABCT also includes the robust design and quality engineering that have made it the industry standard for sludge thickening:

  • Unique adjustable ramp allowing precise adjustment of thickened sludge dry solids content while operating
  • Proprietary polymer mixing for immediate and precise adjustment of polymer rate and clog free continuous operation
