Synopsis

Although everybody recognizes the strong potential of Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) for PHS-containing wastewater treatment, it is also well known that operational costs of these AOPs for the total oxidation of hazardous organic compound remains relatively high compared to those of a biological treatment. However, their use as a pre-treatment step for the enhancement of the biodegradability of wastewater containing recalcitrant compounds can be justified if microorganisms in a biological treatment readily degrade the intermediates resulting from the reaction. Therefore, the coupling of AOPs and biodegradation has a great advantage over either treatment alone in the remediation of organic contaminants. The objective of the CADOX Project is the development up to commercial level of a closed loop hybrid technology based on Integrating Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) driven by Solar Energy and Biological Processes for the remediation of industrial wastewaters contaminated with organic contaminants. For the development of such a process, the attainment of the following scientific/technological objectives is foreseen:
  • Demonstrating that the coupling of AOPs (photocatalysis by TiO2, photo-Fenton and ozone) and biodegradation is a suitable procedure for decontaminating wastewaters containing medium/high soluble pesticides considered as PS by the European Commission;
  • Definition of the best coupling combination for optimising the treatment;
  • Definition of new solar collectors for carrying out TiO2 and Photo-Fenton photocatalysis;
  • the construction and testing of 2 small prototypes with combinations of the previous technologies.
As the Project has begun in February 2003, it is the intention of the authors (Project Coordinator) to present the results obtained during the first year.

Keywords: CPC solar collectors, ozone, photocatalysis, photo-Fenton, priority substances, solar energy, wastewater reuse
