Synopsis

Starting 2004, the regulations concerning waste and its safe and inexpensive disposal are to be tightened and the W.E.E. bill on the recycling of electronic waste is to come on line. The use of farm wastes are also being tightened with the use of slurry being brought under the hazardous waste directive.

The current flurry of regulatory activity challenges to end such wasteful practises as land filling of recyclable materials, the disposal of manure and other on-farm waste. However, we in Northern Ireland are at a severe disadvantage i.e., our population is small and does not allow the critical mass for major projects to be viable. Our total population is two million, which is mainly centralised on two population centres, the city of Belfast in the east and the city of Derry in the West. My hometown is Omagh and is in a mainly rural area and as such, rural dwellers have many problems when attempting to reduce waste.

However, as this is a rural area, the ability to use animal slurries to provide electricity has been one of the first projects examined by our group. These projects would fit in nicely with a small group who do not have a large amount of capital to invest.
