The Start
In 1921 LUDWIG KROHNE began to produce variable area flowmeters. The company moved from rented facilities to company-owned buildings in 1936. These were destroyed during the 2nd World War.

Starting again
In 1949 Ludwig KROHNE’s grandson, Kristian Dubbick joined the company. Under his leadership KROHNE – with an initial workforce of only 8 people - grew to become a leading and one of the most innovative companies for flow measuring devices.

The Generation Change
At the end of the 1970’s Kristian Dubbick relinquished his position of Managing Director and became Chairman of the Board of Directors. Today the company is managed by Michael Dubbick (Controlling and Human Ressources) and Stephan Neuburger (Sales and Marketing).

Variable Area Flowmeters

Electromagnetic Flowmeter

Electromagnetic flowmeters can be used in almost all branches of industry for the measurement of liquids (with or without solids content) pulps, pastes and other fluids that have a specific minimum of electric conductivity.

Superior electronics give you superior results - reliable and repeatable even under difficult process conditions, while quality manufacturing guarantee years of trouble-free use.

At KROHNE, all electromagnetic flowmeters are wet-calibrated by direct comparison of volumes, the most accurate calibration method of all. The KROHNE calibration rig is the world's largest and most accurate.

Compared with other measurement methods, electromagnetic flowmetering offers the following particular advantages:

  • Measurement independent of pressure, density, temperature and viscosity
  • Short inlet and outlet runs
  • Free pipe cross section
  • No additional pressure losses
  • No moving parts
  • Any desired installation location
  • Measurement span 100:1
  • High accuracy - up to ± 0.2 % of actual value

The liner and the electrodes of the flow sensors are available in various materials that will match almost any application.

Ultrasonic Flowmeters

Ultrasonic flowmeters (UFM's) find universal use for non-contact measurement of all fluids and gasses in which ultrasonic waves can propagate. The principle of measurement is based on ultrasonic transit time.

All our ultrasonic flowmeters are calibrated on the world's largest and most accurate calibration rig.

The Highlights of KROHNE's Ultrasonic Flowmeters:

  • High measuring accuracy independent of viscosity, temperature and conductivity
  • No pressure loss through the smooth metering tube and no obstructions to flow
  • Exact calibration by direct volume comparison
  • Intrinsically safe version to European Standard for Zone 0
  • Low operating cost thanks to low power consumption and zero maintenance

Variable Area Flowmeters

Variable area flowmeters from KROHNE offer not only the maximum possible accuracy but also maximum reliability. A wealth of experience and an intelligent quality assurance system enables us to place our VA meters in applications inaccessible to other manufacturers such as nuclear power stations where safety is critical

Technical features
Flowmeters operating on the float principle are suitable for both liquids and gases. This method is inexpensive yet highly accurate and reliable.

Benefits of variable area flowmeters

  • Accurate measurement even at very low flow rates
  • Standard rangeability of 10 : 1 (ratio of full-scale to lower limit value)
  • Suitable for low operating pressures
  • Minimal pressure losses
  • Local indication without the need for auxiliary power
  • Can be used even with short or no straight inlet/outlet runs
  • Essential components easily replaced
  • Exact calculations to VDI codes.

Vortex Flowmeters

Vortex flowmeters operate on the Karman vortex street principle to measure the volumetric flowrate of gases, fluids and vapours.

  • for temperatures from -20...+430°C (-4...806°F) and pressure up to 100 bar (1450 psig)
  • high measuring accuracy (< 0.5% for liquids and <1.0% for gasses) and high reproducibility; stable measurement at Re > 5000
  • non-contact measurement, no mechanically moving sensor parts, maintenance-free
  • suitable for vertical or horizontal installation
  • compact and remote electronics (up to 15 m / 50 ft) versions available
  • flange version DN 15 - DN 300
  • sandwich version DN 15 - DN 200 in stainless steel or Hastelloy C, low sensitivity to pipework noise and conditions
  • communication via HART®-Protocol

Applications

  • for flow velocities up to 7.7 m/s (25.3 ft/s) for liquids or 80 m/s (260 ft/s) for gases and steam
  • hot steam measurement, also for CIP and SIP applications in the food industry
  • specially developed for measurement of low flow rates
  • measurement of liquid operating media with low conductivity
  • measurement of additions in wastewater treatment

Level Measuring Instruments: Level Gauges and Level Switches

KROHNE offers a comprehensive and versatile range of level gauges and level switches for measurement of fluid levels.

KROHNE level products are found in all industries, in all storage tanks and silos, in Ex areas, onshore and offshore as well as on tanker ships, road and rail transporters.

Implementation of various measuring principles, advanced technology and rigid quality control have produced measuring instruments which guarantee high accuracy even under extreme operating conditions. Their applications extend from liquid sulphur at 140° C (284° F) to the storage of liquified gases; from tanks on ocean-going ships to storage tanks in nuclear power stations.

Even at an operating pressure of 400 bar (5800 psig), you can still count on us. However, the easier problems are just as welcome. In all cases, our measuring instruments combine high accuracy, reliability, and economy.

  • Ex-Certificates of conformity
  • Approvals as part of an overfill protection system
  • Approval in conformity with the Druckbehälterverordnung (German pressure vessel code) and various other international approvals

Our devices can be fitted with a choice of user-specific process connections. Various interfaces such as RS 485, Modbus, PROFIBUS-PA, HART® and DTM / FDT 1.2 Systems are available for intelligent data communication.

Batching Controller

The Batching Master is a control instrument, especially designed for the automation of a batch function, where a precise result is required. The Batching Master as a "stand alone version" is a fully functional device that requires just one power supply. The operator has all the information that needed for a safe batching process local to the plant. The batch is started directly at the point filling. If there is a failure in the system, the batch can be stopped immediately. Error messages are displayed in clear text.

Complete Batching Systems

IBS BatchControl offers complete batch systems, consisting of flow meters, Batching Master, valves, Exi-interfaces, Exe-housings, printers and loading software. Based on the cooperation with the main manufacturers in the process measurement and control industry, IBS BatchControl GmbH is able to provide systems customised to your requirements.

Communications
These days sensor and actuator systems placed in the panel for the automation of technical processes are often still connected to control and master data surfaces via the 0/4...20mA interface. The advantage of this interface lies in the easy to handle technology as well as the broad distribution.

Flexibility
Even communication systems not mentioned above, such as MODBUS, are supported by selected devices.

In a production plant, tankers and wagons have to be filled at different loading stations.
The filling process on the plant field side is controlled by a field side batch controller called "Batching Master".

The loading-PC is installed in the control room. The loading software visualizes and controls the loading process. In the administration part of the software, orders and loading orders can be generated very easy with different data base functions.

Functionality of the loading software:

  • Batch supervision
  • Batch control function
  • Customer database
  • Forwarding agency database
  • Vehicle database
  • Product database
  • Order management
  • Creation of loading orders
  • Printing of delivery notes
  • Product and customer statistics
  • Direct loading without an order

Optional functions of the loading software:

  • Data exchange with SAP R/3 databases
  • OPC-Server for the connection to supervising systems
  • System security via card readers
  • Additional languages
  • User database and log files
  • Multi-user system in a client- / server environment
