WaterAid is an international NGO dedicated exclusively to the provision of safe domestic water, sanitation and hygiene education to the world`s poorest people. It was established in 1981 and to date has helped over seven million people. It currently works in 15 countries in Africa and Asia.
With local organisations WaterAid helps to set up low cost, sustainable projects using appropriate technology. The local community is empowered to plan, construct, manage and maintain their own projects. The projects include basic water supplies, such as wells or boreholes; sanitation such as pit latrines and the promotion of safe hygiene practices. Special attention is paid to the role of women within projects as it is they who tend to be responsible for their family`s water supply, and it is they who are best placed to help change their family`s hygiene practices. The long term aim of WaterAid`s work is that its local partner organisations will be able to implement projects themselves. Once able to work independently, replicating working practices and programmes in other areas of need, then the WaterAid family will be able to reach more people than could alone.
WaterAid is independent and relies heavily on voluntary support. Your support today will help expand our work to help more of world`s poorest people gain access to safe water for life.
