Synopsis
In January 1999, a soakaway was constructed at the University campus in Aberdeen and equipped with on-line sensors for the monitoring of inflow from the connected surfaces (530 m2 large conventional urban road with asphalt pavement), water level in the soakaway, groundwater levels in the vicinity of the soakaway and reference groundwater levels 20 m far from the soakaway. The soakaway was designed according to the current UK design practice. Part of the field experimental programme was focussed on the influence of the soakaway on water quality. Systematic sampling of soakaway and borehole water as well as a campaign of more frequent sampling was carried out in the period between February 2001 and July 2002. This paper presents the main results of this programme.
Comparison of measured water quality parameters shows that infiltration drainage systems have a considerable ability to retain pollutants, especially heavy metals. The paper also presents the evaluated trapping efficiencies of the soakaway for various pollutants.
