The cost of the city's first water filtration plant appears to be gushing out of control.
The plant in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx is now expected to cost nearly $3.1 billion. The original estimate in 2003 was $.13 billion.
Budget experts say the higher cost is due to rising construction prices and design changes.
The city Independent Budget Office says the price would have shot up even if the project was not in an unusual and controversial spot - 10-stories beneath a driving range.
The plant is designed to filter up to a quarter of the city's water supply. It's due to be completed in 2012. |
