Cross Manufacturing announces a significant advance in water filtration performance, functionality and reliability with the introduction of an in-line automatic backwashing filter incorporating market-leading intelligent valve actuation technologies.

The new Cross Phoenix IQT combines the well established mechanical benefits of the Phoenix automatic water filter with the industry-proven advantages of the Rotork IQT intelligent electric valve actuator, providing self-contained local and remote electrical control, indication and diagnostics within a double-sealed IP68 watertight and temporarily submersible enclosure.

The Phoenix IQT features secure, non-intrusive point and shoot commissioning and interrogation - with or without mains power connected - by means of a hand held setting tool. User-friendly, easy to follow menus displayed on the actuator screen facilitate filter settings and commissioning. The integral actuator data logger records all settings and a historical log of operating data, including torque profiles. Using the hand held tool, this data can be downloaded for diagnosis on a PC running Rotork’s freely available IQ Insight software, minimising the requirement for routine maintenance.

The filter can be specified for three-phase, single-phase or DC electrical power supplies to suit existing site control systems. Digital bus connectivity options encompass Profibus, Foundation Fieldbus, DeviceNet, Modbus and Pakscan.

Automatic backwashing is programmed with an adjustable pressure differential switch and achieved with the minimum consumption of backwash water. Backwashing is performed without interruption to filtration activity, eliminating any requirement for redundant by bypass filter equipment.

Central to the proven Cross filtration technology is a rugged, all stainless steel “zero-gravity” coil with raised nodes on the surface which define a precise filter rating. Selectable in seven ratings between 12 and 400 microns, the coil is designed to open slightly and evenly along its total length during backwashing, ensuring that the build-up of particles is completely washed away. Six “zero gravity” coils are fitted in the Phoenix IQT, in a specially designed housing that creates a cyclonic flow path for the water passing through, helping to keep suspended solids away from the surface of the coils and therefore extending the length of time before backwashing is triggered.

The Phoenix IQT is manufactured with all-stainless steel wetted parts and has a maximum flow rating of up to 18 litres/second at pressures up to 10 bar.

In locations where space is particularly restricted, the actuator can be mounted separately with customised adaptation. Subject to survey, existing Phoenix filter installations can also be retrofitted with the IQT actuator upgrade.
