Water Meters: Its Types & Advantages

What is a Water Meter & Water Metering?
A water meter is a device that is fitted to the water pipes serving your premises to measure the volume of water passing through the pipe. Whereas the process of measuring water is called water metering. In most developed countries water meters are used to measure the volume of water used by commercial and residential buildings that are supplied with water by a public water supply system.
Water meters can be used at the water resources. It can also be used throughout a water treatment system to determine flow through a particular portion of it. In most parts of the world water meters calibrate flow in cubic meters (m3) or liters . However in the United States and some other countries water meters are measured in cubic feet (ft.3) on an electronic or mechanical register. Some electronic water meter in addition to total usage can also display rate-of-flow.
Types of Water Meters
In United States the American Water Works Association sets the standards for manufacturing water meters. There are several types of water meters in the market. The choice depends on the type of user, the flow measurement method, the flow rates needed, and accuracy requirements.
Displacement Water Meters
Water meters of this kind are often used in residential and small commercial applications. Displacement water meters are usually referred to as Positive Displacement or 'PD' meters. Oscillating piston meters and Nutating disk meters are two common types. Both these methods rely on the water to physically displace the moving measuring element in direct proportion to the quantity of water that passes through the meter. The piston or disk moves a magnet, which in turn drives the register.
Generally the PD meters are very precise at the low-to-moderate flow rates usually of residential and small commercial users. It ranges in size from 5/8" to 2". Displacement meters require that all water flow through the meter in order to push the measuring element. They are not practical in large commercial applications, which requires low-pressure loss or high flow rates. These meters have a built-in strainer that protects the measuring elements from rocks or other debris that could stop or damage the measuring element. PD meters generally have internal measuring chambers made of molded plastics and stainless steel and bodies of bronze, brass or plastic.
Velocity Water Meters
Velocity water meters measure the velocity of flow through a meter of a known internal capacity. The speed of the flow can then be converted into volume of flow to determine the usage of water. The types of meters that measure water flow velocity includes, jet single and multi meters, turbine meters, propeller meter and mag meters. Most water meters based on velocity have an adjustment vane for calibrating the meter to the required accuracy.
Multi-Jet Water Meters
Multi-jet meters are usually used in 5/8" to 2" sizes for residential and smaller commercial uses. Multi-jet meters to create multiple jets of water against an impeller use multiple ports surrounding an internal chamber. The impeller rotation speed depends on the velocity of water flow and low flow rates are very accurate on multi-jets. However, there are no larger sized meters since they do not have the straight-through flow path, which is needed for the high flow rates used in large pipe diameters. Multi-jet meters come with an internal strainer element that can protect the jet ports from getting clogged with debris. These meters have bronze alloy bodies or outer casting whereas the internal measuring parts are made from modern thermoplastics and stainless steel.
Turbine Water Meters
Turbine meters are less accurate than displacement and jet meter at low flow rates. However, the measuring elements do not occupy or obstruct the entire path of flow. The flow direction is usually straight through the meter, which allows higher flow rates and less pressure loss than displacement-type meters. These water meters are usually used for large commercial users and buildings, master meter for the water distribution systems and fire protection. To protect the measuring element from rocks and debris that could enter the water distribution system, strainers are usually required to be installed in front of the water meter. Turbine meters in the market are available for 1-½" to 12" or higher pipe sizes. These meters have bronze, cast iron or ductile iron bodies whereas turbine elements are made of plastic or non-corrosive metal alloys.
Compound Water Meters
Compound meters are used where high flow rates are necessary but where at times there are also smaller rates of flow that need to be precisely measured. Compound meters have two measuring elements and a check valve to regulate flow between them. Water is normally diverted completely or primarily to the turbine part of the meter at high flow rates. When flow rates drop to levels the turbine meter cannot measure precisely, a check valve shuts to redirect water to a smaller water meter that can precisely measure the lower flow rates. The low flow meter is usually a PD or multi-jet water meter. The utility has a record of the total consumption of water flowing through the meter by adding the values registered by the high and low meters.
Electromagnetic Water Meters
Magnetic flow meters are commonly referred to as "mag meters". These are technically a velocity type water meter. However the exception is that they use electromagnetic properties to determine the water flow velocity, rather than the mechanical means used by jet meters and turbine meters. Mag meters apply the physics principle of Faraday's law of induction for flow measurement and to operate the electromagnets it uses AC or DC electricity from line or battery. As mag meters don't have mechanical measuring elements, they normally have the advantage of being able to measure flow in both directions. It uses electronics for measuring and totalizing the flow.
Mag meters can also be useful for measuring untreated water, raw water and wastewater. This is possible as there is no mechanical measuring element to get clogged or damaged by debris flowing through the meter. Strainers are not required with mag meters as there is no measuring element in the stream of flow that can get damaged. Inaccurate reading can be caused by stray electrical energy flowing through the flow tube. Most mag meters are installed with either grounding rings or grounding electrodes. This helps to divert stray electricity away from the electrodes inside the flow tube, which are used for flow measurement.
Ultrasonic Water Meters
Ultrasonic water meters use an ultrasonic transducer to send ultrasonic sound waves through the fluid. This helps in determining the velocity and translates the velocity into flow measurement of the water volume.
Advantages of Water Meters for Water Purification
The benefits of metering are that:

- It helps in detecting water leaks in the water distribution network, providing a basis for the reduction of non-revenue water
- It is a mandatory requirement for quantity targeting of water subsidies to the poor
