The principal constituents are usually the cat ions calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium and the anions carbonate, bicarbonate, chloride, sulphate and, particularly in groundwater, nitrate (from agricultural sources).
- Acidity (pH): The acidity or pH is an important parameter for water quality testing. It is a measure of the acidity of water, which ranges from 0 to 14 with 7 being neutral. Water generally has a pH range between 6.5-8.5 but it can go as high as 9.5. Water with pH of 7 is considered healthy for our body. If water becomes too acidic or too basic, it can have adverse effects.
- Turbidity: Light is an important parameter in water quality testing. Turbidity is the amount of particulate matter that is suspended in water. Turbidity measures the scattering effect that suspended solids have on light. Basically the higher the intensity of scattered light, the higher the turbidity.
