Types of Wastewater Pollution Control Equipment
- Settling Tanks & Clarifiers
Settling tanks and clarifiers are separation equipment. It is generally used for the separation process wherein solids are separated from liquid. This process is commonly known as sedimentation and the tank is referred to as a sedimentation tank. Wastewater treatment process usually involves the use of a settling tank and the use of it generally depends on how the system is designed. However, most wastewater treatment plants employ the force of gravity in some way.
Typically, when the wastewater is treated, large materials are filtered out of the effluent by physical barrier. However, the water will still have smaller particles that need to be removed. To achieve this, the effluent is often held in a settling tank. This tank varies in shape and size. Here, the suspended particles are allowed to settle to the bottom of the tank and the clarified liquid is allowed to flow through. The particle that settles to the bottom of the tank is usually called sludge. Numerous techniques can be added to facilitate this process. Sometimes, settling tanks and clarifiers can be built on an angle to help clear the fluids. At times more than one settling tank and clarifiers can also be used.
Diffused aeration system aids in adding air bubbles to wastewater increasing the dissolved oxygen content. This helps in supplying microorganisms with oxygen. Aeration system helps in controlling biological activity in wastewater treatment. This system is also known as bubble diffusers.
Activated carbon filters are used in wastewater treatment system to remove odor and taste of the effluent. This wastewater treatment is highly effective in removing organic compounds such as volatile organic compounds, pesticides and benzene and contaminants like metal, chlorine and radon from effluents. However, activated carbon filters remove not all water contaminants. it is important to determine the level and type of water contaminants present in the water before buying an activated carbon system.

Tube settlers are mainly used in rectangular clarifiers to increase the settling capacity by reducing the vertical distance a suspended particle must travel. A stack of parallel tubes, rectangles or flat pieces is used in high efficiency tube settlers. A few inches and slopes upwards in the direction of flow usually separate these. This structure encourages uniform laminar flow as it creates a large number of narrow parallel flow pathways. Tube settlers capture the fine particles allowing the larger particles to travel to the bottom of the clarifier in a more uniform form.
Filter press is a slurry pump provides a separation process wherein liquid and solids are separates using the principle of pressure drive that. Filter press is a fixed batch and volume operation. The major components of filter press are skeleton and filter pack. The skeleton holds the filter pack together while pressure is being developed inside filter chamber. However, filter press can hold solids of only a specific volume.
Bar screen is a mechanical filter. It is primarily used to remove large solid objects, such as plastics and rags from wastewater. Bar screens are part of the primarily filtration flow. It is normally the first, or preliminary, level of filtration that is installed at a wastewater treatment plant. They generally consist of a series of vertical steel bars that are spaced between 1 to 3 inches apart.
Bar screens come in numerous designs. Some have automatic cleaning mechanisms using electric motors and chains whereas some must be manually cleaned by means of a heavy rake. Items that are removed from the influent are collected and disposed of in landfills. Since a bar screen collects objects, the water level will rise, and so they must be cleared regularly to prevent overflow.
To remove suspended solids and solid impurities like dust particles, heavy metals and so on, pressure sand filters are highly recommended. It also helps in reducing turbidity. These sand filters are mainly designed to remove a range of suspended impurities from wastewater. Pressure sand filters are a perfect solution for wastewater treatment systems with high sediment, turbidity, sand and silt.
- Fixed & Floating Aerators
Fixed and floating aerators are primarily used in biological treatment to convert organic matter into biological cell matter. This helps in reducing the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) from wastewater. The biological matter consumes dissolved oxygen for respiration and mechanical surface aerators are provided to restore oxygen that was used up.
Flocculators are used for the flocculation process. Usually in a flocculator chemicals are added to the wastewater to coagulate the pollution in the wastewater into flocs, which are fit for separation in the flotation unit. A properly designed chemical treatment step is essential for the proper functioning wastewater treatment system.
In most cases a flocculant, a coagulant and a neutralizer are added to the wastewater to create flocks, which are fit for separation in the separator. The neutralizer can be necessary to increase the pH to prevent acid environment in the separator. The type of chemicals and the dosing rates are an imported factor in the engineering of the wastewater treatment system and can be obtained by a JAR test. The flow through the flocculator is monitored to optimize the chemical dosing, to have good process control and to prevent overdosing. Unlike conventional tank flocculators, this flocculator is of the plug flow reactor type. The required mixing capacity is obtained by energy exchange due to turbulence.
After filtering out solid materials and testing the raw water, wastewater treatment truly begins at the flash mix chamber. In this chamber, chemicals are added to wastewater to primarily aid coagulation and flocculation process. In a flash mixer, the wastewater is mixed violently for a short period of time before being released into a flocculation basin.
